I want to do an MA in TESOL, TEFL, ESOL. Does anyone know of a resonably priced MA that is also recognized. Please could also tell me if there are any I should avoid!

The UAE board is probably not the best place to post this question. Have you done a search on the general ME branch? This has been discussed numerous times.
The answer is pretty much any EFL/ESL or Linguistics MA that is from an accredited college/university in preferably an English-speaking country. The online/resident question has been covered extensively too.

Wigwam, are you looking for a course delivered in the UAE? I did the ME TESOL through U of Newcastle (formerly delivered at the British Council). I saw something online about Newcastle delivering a postgraduate diploma in advanced educational students (TESOL) http://www.ncl.ac.uk/regulations/regulations.html?id=526
but don't know anything about this course in particular. It does appear the uni has done some restructuring in recent years. Hope that helps. |

The British Coucil and Stafford Associates are both worth investigating if you are in Dubai.

I thought the Ministry of Higher Ed stopped allowing the BC to deliver courses in postgraduate degrees (even though the BC was never delivering the courses themselves, only hosting them). Stafford did offer a diploma is TESOL. I think HCT also has an MEd TESOL or MA TESOL.

The British Council was hosting various post-graduate courses. Not delivering or accrediting them.

I have a diploma but now need to get an MA. There are some MA's in the UAE but they seem far too expensive (British University in Dubai quoted 80,000 dhs to study in Dubai evenings and weekends). Does anyone know of a reasonably priced MA that can be done quickly? The pressure to have an MA has increased in the UAE and the Middle Eastand so I am aware of my lack of a qualification.

According to a colleague who's doing the BUD MA, all the students were given forms for scholarships or bursaries. It might be worth asking if there is any financial help available.

I did ask about reductions and discounts and they set a number of conditions which I didn't meet but cannot remember now when I asked which would have brought the price down to about 50,000 dhs - just far too much out of my budget. I am looking for an MA which would cost no more than 25,000 dhs at the most.

Do you mean per semester or for the whole MA? I'd say that your chances of finding an MA at that cost from an accredited legitmate university are slim and none. I would be highly suspicious of any institution that charged that amount as the usual tuition and fear that it may not be accepted very widely.
Mine was free as I was on a scholarship, but if I had been paying the tuition in 1985, it would have been more than that!! For each semester!! And it was in Egypt!

I think VS, you did a fellowship with AUC? That's the way to go. I don't think I found any credible MA programme for under $11,000. I think we've talk about the validity(or lack thereof) of online courses with the Ministry of Higher Education, no?

Yes... right on both counts. Onlines with accredited institutions are fine with Ministry of Higher Ed... a problem with Ministry of Ed. (primary, secondary, military). Unless things have changed in the last few months...

Wigwam, are there 4 stages/modules to that? I paid for mine in 4 stages, and it ended up around 800-900 sterling per stages. Granted, that was in 2002.
