Hi

I am new to the board and I am a young African American female with only a BA degree and I would like to know my chances of getting an ESL job in Turkey beginning October.

In Turkey it is best to have some sort of esl/efl teaching qualification. Not just that it is needed to work legally, all the better schools will require some training.

You really wouldn't want to work at one of the bottom feeder language schools in Turkey. Shocked

I agree wıth tekirdag, get qualification first and then come on over. You have time so why not become that much more confident with some training?

You shouldn't have any problems with race, I'm biracial and had no problem with finding a job here. Just prepare yourself for being stared at all the time. Shocked Shocked Shocked

Language school chain in Istanbul. One was in Şişli, still there I suppose, and there is one on Bagdat somewhere. Şişli one was my first school. Worse than awful.

Hi

There was a thread circa Dec. 05 about the adventures/trials of black women in Istanbul in particular -- maybe it's still up.

I've been twice now but I'm not the expert. There are a couple of other sistas who are already living and working in country or have done so in the past. Maybe they're still around and can tell us something more.

It seems tho that you have as fair a chance at a job as any other native speaker of English with the same quals, which I understand is not true in some parts of the world. I went over the second time to investigate this for myself.

How much teaching experience do you have?

Staring is just the beginning of it. It is what you might call a "warm" culture so people will be very attracted and curious, and not at all shy about getting in your space. Some days I liked being pseudo-famous, and other days not so much.

After my mission I am still game, but only for a definite legitimate offer.

You should have no trouble finding a job. In reference to some certification, i suggest you contact Kent English in Kadikoy because they offer a TEFL course for a month, with accomodation and it could be a good way for you to see a little bit of Istanbul and they will help you find a job when you finish. It is not a bad course but lots of hours in one month. TEFL certification/paper will help you get legal working papers here if you desire them or if your employer wants to employ you legally. Good luck.

Do not do the tosspot Vialingua cert-do a CELTA if you must do one. Why pay the same for a piece of paper that is not accepted everywhere. As for the find you a job service-it is worthless-go and knock on doors yourself.
