Quick question for those "in the know".
My current job offers shakai hoken as an option for those who want it. I am considering joining. At present, I pay for kokumin kenko hoken (national health insurance) for my family (wife and son), plus my wife pays for kokumin nenkin (national pension) separately.
I am trying to figure out the best option financially.
If I join the shakai hoken, how are the premiums calculated- are they based on my income only, or do I need to include my wife's income as well? She works part time, so she earns a lot less than me. Plus, is my whole family covered if I join?
AFAIK, the premiums are something like 8% of my salary for health insurance and 14% for pension if I take the "shakai hoken" option.
Advice, words of wisdom, personal stories? All would be appreciated. |

Are you planning on staying in Japan for a long time? And if you moved, where to?
I am married to a Japanese chick and live in the states. We still pay for her Shakai Hokken every year which comes out to about $1600 US/per payable in June. However, we wouldn't even do it if it weren't for her eye condition. See, she has the possibility of going blind (a disability) at the age of 40 y.o.. If she does become blind, she gets shakai hokken payments every month to the tune of 200,000 JPN YEN. Of course, I hope she doesn't go blind and neither does she, but it was her idea. She has told me though that if it weren't for her eye condition she wouldn't pay it because of the possibility of shakai hokken becoming insolvent with the increasing numbers of elderly in Japan and the decreasing numbers of youth that will pay into the shakai hokken. If you have been reading anything about US Social Security and know its condition, then you know that it is a very similar situation to Japan's shakai hokken.
Other than that, it is realatively inexpensive, about 13,500 YEN/ month. However, rather than relying on something that we'll probably never use, we are funding other investments such as stocks, Roth IRA (US investment vehicle) and my defined benefit with the State of California for being a teacher.
P.S. She opens my Shakai mado too--that's why I pay |
