I was wondering. If you were offered a contract but you realized your job really sucks, would there be any kind of penalties?
I heard that people in schools like Nova, do that all the time....but isn't the point of the contract to prevent people from ditching? |

You haven't even arrived and you're thinking about ditching the job. You're qualified for having a pulse and growing up in Canada and you're expecting the world.
People ditch jobs all the time. Sometimes they get paid, sometimes they don't. If the job is really bad and worth ditching, people don't care about the money and write it off. The smaller the school, the less chance of getting paid. Remember, you're generally paid monthly in Japan and paid for the month you work a month later.
Give two weeks notice on the low side and leave and you are safe. |

Canuck has said it all.
A contract should have something in it stating how much notice is needed. I've asked at jobs I've interviewed for, and usually pose the question as, "If for an emergency reason I need to return home, how much notice must I give you?" 30 days has been the most common response, and none of the places I asked didn't offer me a job.
But yeah, you're not here yet, and you want to leave? The ship hasn't even left the port.
I knew a guy at Nova who gave about 12 hours notice. He was still on probation, but found another job when he didn't get placed in Osaka.
Japan has nice laws protecting employees from firing - 30 days notice from the company or 30 days pay in lieu of you leaving on that day. I have a friend back home who has quit jobs by telling them at the end of the day he's not coming back. His reason is companies fire people all the time at the end of the day, so he should be able to fire them and leave them in the weeds. |
