I�m seeing prices all the way from $100usd/mo-$900usd/mo!!It�s obvious that the r.e.agents are busy there(and jacking up prices),but I just need a decent place c lose to public transportation...even a room would be ok.....thanks for putting me in touch with some people who can rent me something like that for $100-150usd/mo!!!Best,Frank

A lot will depend on what you're looking for. I think you'll have difficulty in that price range unless you're happy sharing a room (and even then not for around US$100).

Craigslist: http://buenosaires.craigslist.org/ - sometimes there are ads for people looking for flatmates, although it seems to have been taken over by agencies trying to make a tourist buck.
La Naci�n Classifieds: http://clasificados.lanacion.com.ar/indexInmuebles.asp allows you to input keywords (like due�o) if you want to try find some owners directly in the sea of agencies.

So I take it that,due to the lower prices for everything EXCEPT rent,from what I hear,the Bs.Aires real estate owners are jacking up the rent,knowing that the foreigner are coming anyway......would that be your assessment?Thanks,Frank PS.Any people having any luck exchanging English lessons for rooms or apts?Thanks for any advice!!!

Well how it works here is that if you want to rent a place for yourself you have sign a contract for 2 years, have a garuantia (somebody who will garuantee the rent is paid if you default), that person has to be an Argentine resident of good standing. You will also have to furnish the flat at your own expense. If you find anything that doesn�t involve all of the above requirements it will be at a higher price to refelect the risk involved in short term letting, furnishing etc. With the economy being as unstable as it has been in the last few years estate agents and private owners aren�t prepared to take any risks when it comes to money!!!
Here in Argentina it�s not so common for young people to share flats, most live with other family members or on their own. So mostly you will find shared accomodation will be with other foreigners. and even if you do find a room in a flat with an Argentine they are usually pretty canny and know they can charge foreigners more!! and who can blame them as I�m constantly hearing foreigners say things like 'Oh I don�t mind paying over the odds, it�s still a bargain compared to home!' Reality soon sets in tho when the first pay cheque arrives....

Relative to salaries here I think that rental prices are expensive overall. As Sheena mentioned - looking for short term, furnished apartments without a garantia - you'll be paying more whether you're Argentine or a foreigner.

How long are you looking at staying for? If you're looking at something cheap short term, some hostels have more long term guests than others and charge in the range you're looking at. Obviously these wouldn't be ideal living conditions but you could use it as a start before finding something better. Student residencias are another option but other than that they are cheap I don't know much about them or if they have any requirements.

In regards to exchanging English lessons for a reduction in rent, you can post ads looking for accomodation on MundoAnuncio as well, why not give it a try?

The prices vary a lot, but it is very difficult for locals as well to find rentals. You can have a look at the ones we have right now http://www.expatrentalsba.com and see if you find anything interesting there.

One idea would be to rent an apartment with somebody else that is relocating to teach english
