I'm in Europe right now . I have signed a contract to go back to my University in China for next semester however I am seriously thinking of staying in Europe and working and not fullfilling the contract .If I tell my University the situation then do you think they will be ok . The thing is is I will probably come back to China and work again in the future possibly even at the same University(if they'd take me again) . I have spent 2 years previous at the University and I get on with them pretty well .
I wouldn't normally mess people around but my relationship depends a lot on the decisions I make in the next few weeks . It's pretty important to me. The University know me well and my girlfriend (who has done courses with them) and have always been very kind but I don't know if they will change their tune if I tell them I won't be back in September . I don't want to get in the situation where I can't work in China in the future because of this . Man I must be desperate to want to go back so much |

If you have been there for 2 years already and have a good relationship with your course managers, boss, FAO, etc. then I don't think they would take any extreme measures.
Is the situation that you completed 2 full 1-year contracts and that you signed on for a 3rd 1-year contract before you left for your summer holidays? That's my assumption.
But, have you got a lot of your stuff in an apartment on the campus etc.?
I think, by completing 2 prior contracts that you've already shown more loyalty and dedication than most foreign teachers, and so since you have an important personal reason, that will prevent you from returning to start the next contract, I think they will be sympathetic. Or, at least they should be appreciative and sympathetic... Also, you can tell them that you would have a good chance of returning at some future date, which will be welcomed I'm sure.
They might still be frustrated about their new recruiting problem for next semester. Hopefully they won't (if it's still in their power e.g. your stuff in your on-campus apartment etc.) try to impose any financial penalty. But, you might offer to help to find someone to replace yourself. Don't get tied into a firm commitment, just offer to post an advertisement/s online and feed them the respondents.
If they do throw a hissy fit then, AFAIK, the worst they could do is block you from returning to work in that same province, they probably couldn't stop you returning to work in another province.
But, I recall you mentioned you are already working in England on another thread. Is that just a better gig? And, I also recall you were looking into NanChang at one point as well. It seems like your recent job in China is not the be all and end all for you. So, if you don't have anything physical or financial there that they can hold you to ransom with, then I wouldn't lose too much sleep over telling them you're not going to be coming back next semester.
But, do the school and especially the students a favour and tell them ASAP so that they have the best chance of finding a good new teacher in time.
Good luck,
LFA

Come on, guy, if you tell them in good time that you cannot fulfill your side of the deal they will graciously drop it and find a new FT. There is no need to worry either about your future here nor for them - plenty of job seekers on the prowl.
I am positive they get confronted with such a situation once every year! Many FTs sign up in more than one place and abandon the unlucky ones among their would-be employers.
IT's a dog-eat-dog world and the Chinese are used to it. |

I signed a contract at the end of Spring semester to come back in the fall with a university a few years back, and then changed my mind during the summer. Nothing happened. Try to give them at least a month's notice if possible, and it should be fine. Plenty of people are looking for work around this time and they should be able to find a replacement pretty easily. |

Thanks guys . Isn't it nice to have concerned co-email friends to support you on Dave's
Well yes I have been thinking of Nanchang and I am in England now teaching but only temporarily . My girlfriend is in the process of persuading me to work in Italy . It's a tough move though for me in many ways . Financially I don't have a lot(and Italy could be expensive) and part of me wants to stay in China . I don't know what drives me to these thoughts of staying there . Since I came to China I found that I have had a lot more purpose in life but then perhaps that's due to teaching(which is brand new for me ) and the introduction of my girlfriend .I do love learning Hanyu and will deeply miss that if I leave and life is just so easy in China generally .However I feel that if I stay in China I will lose her . We have been together 2 years . We met in China and she has studied there whilst living with me for about 8 months of that . The rest has been an e-mail relationship and it is splitting us apart in my opinion . I feel a lonely sad case on my own in China . I see other FT's with their Chinese girlfriends and all I can do is talk about mine who is living on the other side of the world .
In my apartment is pretty much nothing . There are some teaching methodology books that I got cheap in China and one that I got in England - Michael Swan's English Usage . I won't lose sleep over Michael
There are other bits and bobs but I don't really need them and nothing valuable . I do owe the hotel about 100 yuan for internet use though .
I might be back. I need to think and see whether Italy is plausible . Anyway once again cheers for support . |

Go with her to her native Italia, amigo, and enjoy genuine spaghetti, raviioli, lasagna and vino di Montepulciano - you will not regret it and you can also grow in Europe!
China will remain open for you even after that! |

Sheeba, dear coposter,
No worries here. This is almost a "no-starter". Just give them notice that you are not returning with lots and lots of politeness. That will be the end of it. For sure they will pull your renewed FEC and perhaps even they may cancel your visa. But in terms of never being allowed to return, well, frankly, I don't think so.
All the best,
