Yeah, I just put down a deposit on a great flat right near the Rynek. It's on ul. Szewska, near Muchos Potatos and Brogans, which means that the flat is about 30 seconds away from the Rynek. It's 100 sq m, with a large living room, balcony (you can see the Ratusz from the balcony, good hanging out spot)--everything is newly renovated; they're actually finishing up the renovation right now. Newly painted, new floors, new appliances, etc. Three bedrooms, but the small one is going to be an office. The rent is 2000 a month--I'm paying for the office (500 zl/month I think)--so each bedroom is going to be 750. We'll have internet and cable, probably with a wireless router...I'll be living with my girlfriend Asia--she's cool and mellow, and she speaks English quite well...We're moving in August 1. I'd imagine that some folks won't be back til September, but we might work around that.
I've been living near the Rynek above Stary Kino this past year, which was great, but I decided that I didn't want to live in another cramped studio flat. I'm all about the comfort. So I figured I'd just rent a large flat and find another roommate later.
A bit about me: I'm 27, I've been in Poznan for two years, plan on being here a few more. I enjoy cooking, rock and roll music, and wasting endless hours on Daves ESL Cafe. Right, so drop a line if you're interested.

If I were you I wouldn't want to be sharing a room with my girlfriend and a complete stranger, but then each to his own I suppose. |

"Sharing a room?" What are you talking about?! I've got a 100 sq m flat and I'm looking for someone to take the other bedroom. "Complete stranger?" Not really, because there's a pretty small ex-pat community here. If I haven't met a given teacher here, one of my friends probably has.
Anyway, I've lived with other people since I was 18, and I actually enjoy it. I find living in a studio flat almost as isolating and impersonal as living in a tower block of flats. I suspect there are others who feel the same. Besides, it's cheaper to live in a large flat with someone else. Call me a non-traditionalist... |

You wrote that you were looking for a 'room-mate' and not a 'flat-mate'. |

Thanks, but I didn't realize that only one form of English was used and taught in Europe. Of the many philology students I've met in Poland, I'd guess that half study British English and half study American English. Are you implying that because England and Poland are both in Europe, only British English should be used? Even between English teachers? The logic escapes me. But thanks for another constructive post relating to my search for a roommate! |

I'm implying nothing of the sort although that seems to be what you've inferred (no wonder the logic escaped). I'm simply trying to help by suggesting a reason your post got the confused response it got.
Anyway from dictionary.com (a US based online dictionary):
roommate
n. A person with whom one shares a room or rooms.
roommate
n. An associate who shares a room with you
Good luck in finding your room-mate. And the best of British to you. |

We all lost our kudos when the Americans started arrivingin Poz in bulk.We all got tarred with the same brush.
It doesn't surprise me you're too mean to live alone, most Americans I met there were loathe to stand a round.
Sad but true. |

Yes, Sad but true. Once we had an empire and people strove to sound as we did. There was kudos in achieving a native level quality of pronunciation and good diction helped no end in achieving that elusive word so suited to the task, 'le mot juste' was always on the tip of yer tongue. Now there is no striving at all, even among some of our so called "native speakers" or this is what they claim to be, but for my money most of their efforts fall short of a complete utterance and they seek neither to correctly enunciate nor to confirm that this has been taken on board by their interlocuteur such is their misplaced faith in the superiority of their own brand of English Whatever happened to 'striving excellence'?
well we have been there before and done this to death many times on this board and on others too. I suppose a browse might be a useful suggestion to make to these parvenus just to confirm that there are others who will ,make an effort and try not to confuse. like man y'know huh? |
