I don't know if queretaro is funky... it's got a lot on some of the other cities in central mexico.

If you can live in the city center... do. I've been there in the city a couple of times, met my girlfriend there, and made some friends.. (the girlfriend, and a lady who lives out in juriquilla on the golf course)... there's a bit too many tourists there for my tastes...

if you can... meet the couple who run trotamundo's (little cafe with doner kepab type food and some other asst'd foodstuffs)... I don't know their story, but they look like they're deeply in love. I'll laugh if they're not even a couple.

				| Is Quertero a good place to visit as a tourist? My friend and I wanted to go to Oaxaca but the protests are keeping us away. Thanks for the input.

				| Shame about the protests keeping you away from Oaxaca... it is really an excellent place...
However, I would suggest Michoacan as an alternative. Morelia, Pazcuaro, Uruapan, Paricutin volcano, and there are beaches as well (and theres also Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa beaches in neighboring Guerrero). Its not as well-traveled by foreign tourists but it really should be.

				| hm..... thanks so much for responding -- I have to say though that meantime I've been looking at a book (not the best resource I'm sure) and the best place I could come up with was Xalapa and Veracruz. We wanted something 1. not resorty, 2. not huge 3. preferably near ruins and/or beach. I'll look up those places you mentioned, though. I have no idea what I'm doing here...

PS the problem wtih Veracruz is that it's so far from the border and we're taking a bus. I hope it doesn't cost more than 200 dollars round trip ....
