Just wanted to drop a note that I'm in Hong Kong now! Over all, 16,000 HK is plenty enough to live off each month. It's the start up costs that are killer over here, I find. Security deposits on apartments, cellphone, furniture, internet. I needed more money to come over with, but managed to get that, but now that I'm here my monthly salary will be more than plenty.
So, any good expat bars people recommend? During the summer I'm teaching all drama camps, so I'm jumping to a new school every week (craziness), but I ended up stationed in Tseun Wan myself come september, and then teaching theatre as an ECA in the afternoons. It should be good.
Well, hope to hear from ya'll soon.

Sounds good to me. I am arriving on the 15th. If you are new NETS do you have any idea when our induction is to be held? I thought I read something about a NET get together on the 18th of August but can not locate that now amongst my plethora of emails/letters. |

hi new nets
There is a get-together for all new NETS and old NETS on Friday 18th August at 7pm at the Mariners Club, 3rd floor, 11 Middle Road, Tsim Sha Tsui (TST). If you're not sure where the Mariner's Club is, you will find a map on the NESTA website at
http://www.nesta.com.hk/
If you go to the TST MTR station, check the location map and you will find Mariner's Club.
You can also join NESTA if you like, while you are at the get-together, but there is no obligation. NESTA organizes socials and is a support group. Details on their website.
good luck and I hope you enjoy HOng Kong.

no worries Surrealia, I think all us newbies should stick together!
What about Delaneys in Wan Chai, I've heard good things about it from the people I know in HK already
Oh but then I'm biased coming from an Irish background x lol |

Hmm.. I'm living in Causeway Bay, and I'm admittedly partial to any of the places on Food walk right off of fashion walk. Some great little bars and tapas places, but really, drop me a PM when you all get here and we'll arrange something! I also have a Hong Kong mobile number now I can PM you with!
It's not as scary as you might think it is, but for those of you just arriving, start up costs are very, very costly. Big deposits for electric, cell phone, internet/cable and then the three month rent deposit for the classier areas. Some of the new territories or on Lamma island are only 2 months upfront, but for Causeway we had to pay 3. But it's all paid and you get most of it back at the end, so it's like saving up for later, lol.
I hope you all have safe journies, and enjoy teaching your kiddos. I'm not a NET teacher either, I teach with www.dramaticenglish.org , but us teachers have to stick together! Also, sometimes it's very nice to meet people outside of your company, I find!
