My friend is thinking about finding a job in Busan Korea and would like to know if it's possible to Travel to Japan, Tokyo on Weekends or at least once month
how much would it cost transportation wise & with staying at a hotel for 2 nights and a small amount of spending money ( not too much)
Would doing something like this during the weekends (at LEAST once a month) be possible with a average esl teacher salary? |

Lodging costs will vary depending on where you stay and what type of lodging you choose (hotel, hostel, business hotel, tourist hotel, etc.). Figure on roughly 3000 yen/day for a hostel, or 5000-8000 yen/day for a hotel. These may or may not include breakfast.
Lunch and dinner are what you make of them. An apple and an onigiri, or a bowl of ramen or udon, or McDonalds meals, or a set menu in a restaurant? Could be 500 yen to 2000 yen.

I don't know what teachers make in Korea, or what airfares (or ferry costs) are, so I couldn't say exactly, but a prudent budgeter who is serious about this sort of scheme will probably be able to manage it. |

Between Korea and Japan here's the deal...
Japan kicks Korea's ass in just about every respect except one and a very important one at that...unless you have a truly top end uni. position in Japan you can forget about saving much money...fact is, in Korea thhey pay for the flight and return airfare and for housing and they don't do that in Japan (the utilities will nail you in Japan), you can save so much more in Korea...but Korea is a sewerpit shit hole where you can't drink the water and almost every Korean involved in the ESL business is a thief and a cheat...I am making the sacrifice of staying in Korea to save money...no other reason...reflechez bien avant que vous prenniez une decision! Parce que des fois c'est vraiement insupportable ici, surtout la pollution d'air et l'atmosphere extremement sale, l'abime, mon ami...j'arrete de raconter...mais il faut bien reflechir! |

Glenski - Thanks for the info that helped alot ( be looking for teh cheapest of the cheapest prices lol) , btw are hostels hard to find?
Deicide - even we're going off topic ... I know on a general basis i like japan more but japan is also that much more expensive and I have a friend in Seoul, Korea right now (his thrid time there) and he's having a blast so I guess it depends on the person |

What do you mean by "much"? If you are a JET Programme ALT, you will get airfare paid for, and you might get partial or total reimbursement for rent as well. It's case by case. Plus JET ALTs get paid 300,000 yen/month vs. the 220,000-270,000 that conversation school teachers get. JET isn't the only way to save money here. Depends on where you live, whether you share housing, what your lifestyle it, etc. Half of a conversation school teacher's salary goes to basic necessities, but what you do the remaining half is up to you. Want to drink it away? No problem, but you decide how to spend 125,000 yen/month. |

Yeah I don't have problems saving money. I won't be able to retire when I go home but what the hell. I suppose I don't have much of a life but what the hell-I'm comfortable with that  |

IMO, if you're willing to do extra work, there's more opportunity to make good extra money in Japan. Korea's not even that cheap anymore: Seoul was ranked 2nd most expensive city in the world on the most recent MHRC survey (not that I really buy it... but there must be something to it). Point being, any extra amount you may be able to save in Korea won't amount to a hell of a lot considering, and then you still have to live in Korea... Free accomodation is pretty sweet though, sorely missed in Japan (some JETs aside) |
