Is there a Malaysia page on here?

I am in BKK, and have a fairly typical love/hate relationship with the place. I love it but some days.........

A friend advises KL. He loves it there. Despite it being Moslem, he has a good time, the people are great etc. Says it is safe. The prices about same in general as LOS. Food less spicy. He is not an ajarn, though, so I have no word about jobs/pay/condos.

Anyone tell me about KL? Links?

I think u may be splitting hairs.

Do u mean that it is Australasia?

Is Indonesia Australasia too?

I am only concerned with info about the place. If u think that it belongs within an alternative geographical disposition, and that I have missed frequent postings within another sub-section of the board, I would happily stand corrected, and welcome any redirection which might assist me.

I did my CELTA in KL and briefly looked around for jobs afterwards. KL would be a great city to live in. It is a very diverse place with Malay, Indian, and Chinese influences. Plus, its got a large international business community.

The biggest problem I hit in my search was that in order to get a working visa the government requires two years of teaching experience. I was just starting out so some places wouldn't even talk to me. The other problem I saw was that the pay was relatively low compared to the cost of living. I don't know about a direct comparison to BKK but KL is certainly pricier than Thailand in general. There are a lot of temptations to spend your money on in all the malls of KL. While I thought it might be possible to find a job that paid the bills I didn't really want to have that feeling of never having enough. Also, jobs can be scarce because, as a former British colony, Malaysia has plenty of near-native speaking locals who will work for a lot less than Westerners.

Having said all that, my knowledge was based on a rather limited search and if you really want to look into it then you should hop an AirAsia flight and do some walking around (and, of course, eating) in KL.

I spent 6 months in KL in 2004. I enjoyed it and agree with you Dillinger that you can spend alot of money at those shopping malls. But the groceries were cheap and a wide variety to choose from.

Most everyone I dealt with spoke English, the only ones that wouldn't were the Chinese cab drivers and they would speak if they knew you. People were friendly and I felt very safe and comfortable. Saying that I knew something about Malaysia before I went from friends here in the states and in the UK.

Anyone care to add anything? I am specifically interested in KL.

Anyone been there to teach, loved it or hated it?

I have a Uni background and am also able to teach business studies etc at good schools, in addition to TEFL and Business Eng.

I am not interested in tin-pot language schools and farang factories.

is there much "decent" work in KL/

What are the salary ranges?

If you have a B.Ed or a master's in certain subjects I can give you links to two universities is KL that I know hire busines studies teachers. i will be teaching Int'l Bus and HR in July.

My salary will be 6,288 Ringgits/month. It's very low but the job is exactly what I want. Plus, I get the sweet holidays.

ELS has offered myr4000....and I just saw that 6000-some was low for Malaysia. So, I'm just doing one more check, before I look elsewhere. If I were to look at teaching in Malaysia with a MA in TESOL, then I should look at the Universities? And a 'good' salary for University is overr 6000?
Any ideas on whether this supports childcare (one one-yr-old needing nanny) and vacation travel?
