I agree with PanamaTeacher here. It isn't even possibel to give meaningful advice within a single country with a question that broad. Tokyo and Asahi-mura are too different to give a single answer about.

I would recommend you go to the EFL in Asia website at:

http://www.geocities.com/eflinasia

Read some of the articles related to countries you would be interested in visiting. That should give you a better idea of where you would like to go.

You can consider all those variables or you can consider the one variable that really matters. That variable is: How much money is in your pocket at the end of the month after you have paid all your bills, taxes, housing costs, etc.

That bottom line issue has been discussed and debated here frequently - with Korea, Japan, Taiwan coming out as places most discussed as providing favorable rates of savings. Korea - usually out in front.

Here are some average (repeat: AVERAGE) figures for Japan cost of living.

rent 50,000 - 80,000 yen/month
utilities 20,000 yen/month (seasonal and depending on lifestyle and location)
phone 5000-8000 yen/month (depending on attached Internet and other services; local and long distance calls both add to the cost)
groceries 30,000-50,000 yen/month (quite variable)
