I recently received a letter from my IP(J:COM) not to download copyrighted stuff via my p2p software. Personally, I don't think it's any of their (f'n) business what I do on my own pc, but was wondering if they would cut my service if I didn't comply with their request. Any thoughts? |

What language was it in?
Seriously, how could they know what you are downloading? They can find out how much bandwidth you are using, but that's it (as far as I know). |

Sounds like it's just a general mail out to its customers.
There's slightly less chance of being prosecuted for downloading stuff as there is of being killed by a falling meteorite. |

The letter was in Japanese(my wife translated it). They knew exactly the stuff I downloaded(names of movies) and their IP addresses too. Since they are my IP provider I'm sure they can monitor anyone that uses their server. Sucks! Feel like I'm in the US under the Bush regime... |

Same thing happened to a friend of him. The RIAA (or maybe a similar agency in japan) put up movies on these file sharing thingies like bait. You download, they catch your IP and then contact your service provider and try to strong arm them into cancelling you.
My friend got a letter just like your from time warner. When he did not stop downloading stuff they canceled his account for a violation of terms of service. He moved to another provider. |

So the question is... how can we avoid this invasion of privacy? Will using certain settings in a firewall hide our IP address, and what are internet actions are? Are there any internet savvy folk out there who can give a good answer to this? |

Try downloading a program called PeerGaurdian.
It blocks nasty people from watching you...
Surprising how much stuff it catches. |
