Hi there,
My apologies for posting this in an esl forum, but this is the closest forum I could find.
I am a 25 year old qualified NZ teacher. Ie I have a bachelor degree and a graduate diploma in secondary education. I have no experience other than the placements I did during my grad dip.
Is there work for me in Oman? And if so what sort of salary benefits are there? I have done numerous searches and found similar information but not exactly what I am after.
Can anyone help??
Thanks and regards

If you have your heart set on secondary teaching, your best option may be the International schools- apparently a new one is opening in Sohar soon. If you have a PGCE the British School might be intereseted, too. Omani government schools are unlikely to employ teachers from the developed world on a paid basis, though you might find training positions or something across the border in the UAE.
You don't mention your specialist subject, but if you are really interested in working in Oman, there still is enough of a demand for English teachers and some establishments will accept teachers with other backgrounds. Notching up some practical experience never hurt.
A final word: September is still the smoothest starting time. So no time like the present... All the best. |

Kia Ora e hoa, Kei te pehea koe?
If you are looking for work in secondary schools, I can't directly answer your question - you would be viewed as an "NQT" - Newly Qualified Teacher", to use British terminology. I would guess that the expat schools in Oman would want to have fairly experienced teachers... but who knows what the situation really is? That said, it is likely that they will have already filled their vacant positions for the new academic year... if not, then you probably have a better than even chance.
With regard to teaching ESL/EFL, if you go with any of the agencies, then as a qualified teacher, with a degree and as a teacher with English as a mother tongue, you probably have a good chance of getting work. Try looking at various websites (MOD edit) under the Oman section... CECN are advertising and according to the salary offer they released in early June a first year teacher, with a bachelor's degree would earn 715OR per month, excluding travel allowance of 55OR. I am now out of touch with NZ teaching salaries (NZ$36,000?)... but this is probably very competitive to what you would earn in NZ. Beware though, of my comments about CECN in an earlier posting. |
