Hey folks, I've just recently finished the CELTA and am looking for jobs in China at the mo. I've been applying like mad to the language schools/universities that seem to have the best renumeration etc. and the only reply I've had is from a post on the Caf, from the Changchun Teachers College. Initially, all sounds good-6000RMB per month, 20 contact hours per week, 30 students max, fully furnished accomodation on campus, 6000RMB bonus after 9 month contract. However, my one gripe is that travelling to Changchun alone (with return flight at the end of the contract) is going to cost over 300 more than the bonus allows. Has anyone else found this to be the case with other colleges/universities/language schools?
I don't want to seem unappreciative, it's just that, I don't have a lot of money as it stands and I don't want my pay just to reimburse my flights and would like to have something to live on when searching for my next job after the end of my contract. Do I seem unreasonable? |

My last employer, Inner Mongolia Nationality College would not pay for my Beijing-Hohhot airfare (around 400 RMB), and my current employer, Changchun Normal University or as you know it, Changchun Teachers College, would only pay me one-way airfare because I am already in China.
PM me if you'd like to know more about the university (you can also do a search for it). I am new here but have been at the university since July 17th. |

Buy your flight in China, it will likely be less expensive.. You should be able to save the difference with your salary. Just buy the flight early if your contract ends in June or July cause that will be the busy season and flights will be retarded expensive.. |

Because of the cost of operations of schools have gone up..many schools have capped the transpo cost at 6000RMB for a 9 or 10 month contract or 8000 at a full year...
If you have a friend that works for an airline..you may be able to lessen the cost by going through a program such as "Friends of United" where round trips cost less then 500USD...
Changchun Normal use to house their teachers off campus in a building near the main street of life "Gui Lin" Lu...to hear that they are now moving on Campus is too bad...campus is nice ...they also have a Chinese program and at one time (not sure if they are still) had contracts to run the Language school for Christians Orgs that were serving as teachers for Christian English Programs... |

I also workes at CTc last year and they paid me all of my air fare (total of just over 10,000 yuan) but as cj750 pointed out, many colleges are now capping the amount, meaning you will have to foot the difference.

Not any longer, you will live on campus probably in one of the purpose built apartments for FTs. I saw these being built last year, and just from the from looking at the construction site many of the FTs would comment ' i'm glad i wont be living there!' ; but I have no idea as to the actual quality of the inside of the apartments though I am sure they are not as large as the apartments the FTs used to be in.
They do have a chinese programme, you might be able to persuade you boss to that you can attend for free (i did) but if you are teaching 20 hours a week you will find this very difficult as the classes only run 8-12, mon-fri - and you will probably be teaching most mornings.
There are a quite a lot of Christian missionaries come-teachers in Changchun and they ofen do work for the unis who pay them considerably less (2k or less or even Free!). |

As the good book sez..it is Christian to undercut......
Christian orgs are the greatest threat in china to FTs who make education their lively hood....they use a vehicle that the Chinese cannot resist...lower cost...and then flush the market with underpaid/ under train and unprepaired young scubaed faces...financed with the aims of religious marketeers intent on using English to worm their way into the classroom so as to feed their version of salvation to an unsuspecting people. |

I have been living in the new apartment for three days now. The apartment's setup is identical to the one that was assigned to me temporarily when my wife and I arrived here on July 17 (I was one floor above moderntime's apartment). These units are for teachers in the Foreign Language College while the International Cooperation College teachers stay in the other section. We were told we'd only have to be in the temporary apartment for "a week or two" and it ended up being over six weeks. The apartment is in a seperate section of the building and we have our own front door so no attendant and we can come home as late as we want. There are twelve apartments, two on each floor. The second floor apartments are occupied by two Japanese teachers, mine being on the third floor, fourth floor's occupant is a Dutch teacher, fifth floor is an American teacher, and the sixth fllor apartments are occupied by three American teachers (two being husband and wife). Apparently there are a lot of problems with the apartments as the attendant told me today that the workers would be spending the entire day next Monday fixing various problems. |

CJ, thanks for the well wishes and tips. I walked into the Mayflower a few weeks ago with Tazmania and one of my colleagues just to see how "interesting" it was. It was quite early so not too many people and the place didn't look that interesting. I didn't want to stay anyway, just wanted to see why people are all talking about it on the net (Chinese and expats).
I will check out the other bars and the restaurants you've mentioned. I brought my wife to the Seaport Bar last night after dinner and moderntime joined us later, along with another Davester whose ID I can't remember now who's only been in Changchun for a week. Because the Paradise Fondu had closed down, some of the foreigners who used to go there went to the Seaport. For a while there it felt like back in Canada, shooting the breeze in English over pints of cold draft beer. There was Alex of www.changchunfriends.net from Italy, Tim from Ottawa, Jason from PA, and a Nigerian guy whose name I can't quite recall now (obviously he has no problem keeping his visa). It was a fun, though expensive night out. |
