I'm flying to Mexico on Sunday to start a new job. Due to increased security measures I'm not going to be able to take on any hand luggage apart from my wallet, tickets and passport. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I should do with my laptop? It's brand new so I really don't want it to get broken! Has anyone checked a laptop into the hold before and if so how did you pack it up?!

If you want to be as safe as possible, use a hard case, put the laptop in the middle of your clothes, and make sure the case is packed full so the laptop won't shift. But I've put mine in my rucksack on several long-haul flights without any problems.

thanks for all the advice. Now more worried about spending hours camped out at Heathrow. The flight going to Mexico City that was suppose to leave yesterday lunchtime still hasn't gone!

Laptop no problem, I have packed it in my luggage and sent it in an overnight package. Good advice to pack it tight and not let it shift. I know someone personally that packed his desktop in his luggage and transferred it to three different countries without any problems except for the electric conversion which isn't a problem with a laptop it has its own converter.
