Don't worry Sweetsee, after 20 yrs of teaching I have been in that situation a few times. Maybe JT is perfect, or delusional....
If you see the same students you can always do the old:-
"Good Q. , lets see who in the class can come up with the correct answer for next week" or
if you won't see them again you can still ask the class if anyone knows, of course after having asked the student first what they THINK it means. Both strategies give you 'stalling' time; the former situation of course is preferable.
Failing that, I have 'owned up' and students rarely (actually never) recoil in horror. I tell them I will find that out and let them know, by email if I won't see them again. Especially in regard to grammar terminology, very little of which I was taught as a native speaker, I explain that we can usually work it out by them giving an example of what they mean, in some context.
Having said that, I don't get many qs I can't answer, but I HAVE been in that situation.
