Hello,
I just joined this forum! Last winter I spent two months in southern Mexico, traveling from Mexico City, through the south, up to Cancun. I fell in love with Oaxaca City and immediately thereafter got a TEFL Certificate! Does anyone have any helpful tips on reputable schools in Oaxaca (even Puerto Escondido or Huatulco) or Merida, or Playa del Carmen, or even San Miguel de Allende for an unexperienced teacher with a college degree? I'm hoping to start in January because it doesn't seem to be a good idea to head down in November looking for jobs... Also, I'm African American and did feel a little bit of prejudice from my homestay family - are there any cities that are more densely populated with people of African descent? |

I'm sure LS has given you a good tip in his pm, but for the benefits of all readers. I think the Cambridge Academy in Oaxaca City is the best job in the City itself. It can be hard to get enough work in Oaxaca City and many teachers who start out there later move to the small towns in Oaxaca to work at the regional universities. As for populations with African desent, the western Oaxaca cost is one place. Between Pinotepa National and Puerto Escondido. Another area would be the gulf coast around Veracruz. In both cases, they are people of mixed racial background. |

Unfortunately, Mexico, like everywhere else, has its racists.
You can find small colonies of Afro-Mexicans on the coasts of Oaxaca and Guerrero. You might find it interesting to visit towns like Copala, or Marquelia, both in Guerrero, but I think it would be impossible for you, or anyone, to work there. They're really tiny communities.
If you're interested in seeing that part of the country anyway, your best bet is to take any bus south along the coast from Acapulco.
Best of luck. |

A college degree, a TEFL cert, and little or no EFL teaching experience would qualify you for basic entry level jobs here. You'd have to start near the bottom and work your way up.
As for racial make-up, Merida has such a variety and mixture of races that you wouldn't stand out because of your race. Merida isn't all that far from Belize, Jamaica, Cuba, etc., so it's not at all unusual to see people of African descent here, some as visitors and others who have lived here for a long time. However, if you're looking for separated populations/cultures of people of African descent, you won't find them in Merida. |
