Hi all. A nice smple question or 3.
Can I get a teaching job in Vietnam with just a TEFL and no degree?
I have been looking at Thailand on ajarn.com and it seems a BA is a prerequisite.
Also feedback on HCM vs. Hanoi would be welcome.
What agencies should I avoid and would you recommend?

You can't get a work permit without a degree but you can still buy 6 month business visas through travel agents in Hanoi and HCMC. The better schools with better pay won't be interested in employing you without a degree but there are still a lot of jobs available. It's not as easy as it used to be though.
You won't find a legit agent offering you a job without a degree. Very few jobs are advertised and those that are require a degree. My advice is to come here with enough money to get by for at least two or three months and contact schools directly.
Hanoi vs HCMC. Without a degree, HCMC. Lots more schools there are in need of teachers. When you come is also important. Between December and February things are slow as Tet approaches and less people sign up for English classes. Things pick up in March / April and ther high season is school summer holidays in from June to August. |

You used the word Agent.
Wouldnt' it be better to just go to HCMC and then visit the schools?
I have a BA and a CELTA.

I have a BA but not TEFL.
Do I need to get a TEFL too? I am willing to do it because I think I need it and will help me.
I don't want to go to HCMC only to find out I can only get work at the lessor schools because I lack a TEFL. |
It's possible to get a job without a TEFL. However, having a TEFL will definitely make you more attractive to employers. I recommend it. It only takes a month to get this qualification. You could get it in HCMC while searching for a job. http://www.teflintl.com/vietnam_ho_chi_minh_city.htm
I agree that visiting the schools is the best way to look for work here. |

| Demand is high in Hanoi as well, but it's true that more schools will also likely mean more cracks to slip through administratively. HCM city might be to your advantage there...however...if you have a B.A. and no TEFL, you can definitely get work in either city. Not necessarily inferior positions either. Look for schools that are fully Vietnamese owned (but still credibly run). The foreign owned schools are under a great deal of pressure after the much publicized collapse of SITC. The Vietnamese schools can play the game a little more discreetly. Check www.saigonesl.com for HCM or www.newhanoian.com for Hanoi. Both list schools, and the I think the new hanoian has an active job board. |
