Wondering if anyone has any suggestions regarding both places to look for professional jobs (not backpacker-style gigs) in Guangzhou as well as recommendations for cheap accommodation on a longish-term basis while I look around for a position. Thanks for all information.

I've worked at three good places. Canpac (there's a website), Xin Dong Fang (New Oriental), and the place I work now, The Tutoring Center for Intl. Students. Can Pac teaches business classes and is usually looking for full time serious, qualified teachers. They require lesson plans. They pay 150 an hour. Xin Dong Fang pays 400 for a 2.5 hour class, but they really want ENTHUSIASTIC teachers. Another drawback is that they draw in students with cheap tuition and they make it cheap by allowing up to 70 students in a class. At least they give you a microphone! Both of these schools pay on time and have easy-to-get-along with managers. Of course I hope you will consider the school I work for right now, the Tutoring Center. I'm head teacher and really need a couple of qualified teachers, preferably female (we are small and this is the demand of the customers). Idea We offer 10000 per month for full time, 150 yuan per hour part time, help with finding an apartment and with getting a visa. Full time is between 17 and 22 hours. Usually no weekend class. There's a 5000 yuan bonus for staying one year. We have very small classes (one to four students each), airconditioning, spiffy classrooms, and best of all, the nicest, most flexible owner/director you could possibly ask for. She's an experienced and knowledgeable teacher, always pays on time, and tries to work with teachers' needs. We especially need a kindergarten/low primary grades teacher to start immediately. We have another position (STARTING SEPT 1 !) teaching older kids and adults in the beautiful downtown part of Dongguan (about 45 minutes from GZ). You would also have a very nice, cheap apartment near the school. That position requires 2 hours per day from Tuesday to Friday and 6 hours on both Sat and Sunday.

I forgot because I don't have any good ideas. The best I can come up with is to see if you can get a discount at the hotel/foreigners dorm located behind the Tian Jia building (where they teach Chinese to foreigners) at South China Normal University "Hua Nan Shi Fan Da Xue". It's normally 100 yuan per night, but maybe they would let you stay for less if you stayed or paid up front. Sorry I can' t be more helpful on this one.
