What recommendations/suggestions can anybody give for apartments in Warsaw? Which neighborhoods are all right, and which should be avoided at all costs? What are the going rates for one/two room, furnished apartments (something a little better/bigger than the usual "kawelerka") with utilities included?

Well I can tell you that the most notorious district is undoubtedly Praga, on the east bank of the river Vistula (Wisla). Central station used to be notorious too, but it seems to have been cleared up now.

From what I hear, the average monthly rent for furnished apartments is
about 1900 zloties. I can see you're already based in Poland so I probably don't need to convert that into western currency.

I hope this helps.
