I crossed Shane off my list quickly because they seem to have the most uniformly negative comments about them. However, I'm curious, and I hope the OP doesn't mind a slight diversion--if this poll can be believed (and I'm not saying it's reliable), Shane is VERY popular with its students. Does anyone know what it is they might be doing that appeals to their customers/students so much?

Elliewelliesj, when you google any large company, you are going to find bad things about them. It's the small, unknown, places that you need to be scared of.

Bad compared to what?

Every company has it's good and bad points. You have to take them both into account when applying for jobs.

Shane gives more vacation than most of the major chains that I can think of (NOVA gives something like 10 days vacation, while ECC gives a similar amount to Shane), while Shane gives 35 days. That does not include national holidays (there are 15 days, but Shane is open on 2 of them). That's a pretty big plus right there.

The biggest nagative is that you probably won't have two days off in a row. Having Saturday and Sunday off is unlikely, unless you negotiate it into a second contract. It's not as bad when you consider all of the holidays that you get, but it is definitely a negative. The annoying thing here is that once a month, you are on standby in case you have to cover someone's shift. It's possible that you may lose one of your two days off in the week.

Also, the age range is quite large. You could be teaching a 2-year old in one class, and then an adult in the next class. Some people might like it, and others might not.

There are also the usual tactics used by large companies to save themselves money (ie. making sure you are under a certain amount of teaching hours so that you are only considered to be part time). You find companies doing things like this all over the world. It's an unfortunately common thing to see with many large companies.

One thing that can be either looked at as good or bad, depending on your preferences, is that are you not working in the same school every day. Within an assigned region, you may be working at a different school every day. Obviously there are both good things and bad things about this.

Compared to the other large eikaiwas, I think Shane is around the top of the group (large amount of holidays being the largest factor).
