At the one extreme an institution or Immigration office makes a request from the issuing institution for a certified transcript. At the other extreme the prospective employer/ bureaucrat makes a verbal enquiry. In between would be, I suppose, asking to see the degree and perhaps asking a few questions, maybe checking the web to see that University of X actually exists.

What was your experience in China?

There must be a software disc somewhere with an assortment of Unis and degrees......who has got one?

Should someone be so dastardly as to actually *pretend* to have a conventional degree from a real campus... the problem with on-line degrees, life experience degrees and those utterly bogus ones that used to be printed up in a certain kiosk in Bangkok (the principals have since been arrested), is that while the paper isn't bad (though not real cotton rag) and font looks legit, the seal looks cheap and phoney.

But I am not opening up the can of worms about phoney degrees. I am asking about fellow forum member's experiences in China with their legitimate degrees.

I got my undergraduate degree from Harvard (1963), and did my PHD in linguistics at Princeton (1966).

(I was doing some work with Albert on another subject at the time and we wanted to be close.)

In China you do not even need a fake diploma. Just type a professional looking transcript with a red chop and you are IN!

I faxed copies of smudged, old copies of my originals. That was all I ever needed to do. Now that I know where the originals are, I'll have to get some more copies faxed to me.

I faxed through the genuine article, but I doubt if they check, 'cos another guy worked here on a University of Kalamazoo special, bought off the net.

You do not need a real degree or even a pretend one to work in China, although a pretend will at least make them feel less ridiculous. They might give you some hassle but just tell them you "forgot it" or were just too darn lazy to get it. Or tell them you'll have it later...

Then reconsider working in this country if you have a degree. Why not work in a country that actually respects education and degrees and pays enough where you could save enough to "earn" a one-year sabbotical in China and still have savings left over?

The choice is yours. Shocked

Yeah, I know plenty of people working in China with no degree. My previous job specified that a degree and TESOL cert' were required to work there...in reality, they took anyone breathing who looked the part.

I have a degree, but why take it with me to China? It's on a wall some where 3000 miles away. Will this be a problem since my school has a faxed copy etc. and I have obtained a Z-Visa? Rolling Eyes
