Hi Everyone,

I am leaving for Asia this Sunday and would appreciate any suggestions you could provide to me regarding shopping for teaching aides while I am still here in the US. I have been away from teaching for some time now but I do recall the frustration I encountered while overseas at the difficulty in obtaining material. I have picked up world/us maps, simple basic "teen type" novels, laminated pronoun guides, childrens magazines and a few videos. Those wh are curretnly overseas please help me complete my shopping.

Thanks
Lee

Video players are obsolete now in China, though your school may have one gathering dust somewhere. Personal reference books - a dictionary, thesaurus, cobuild grammar- are useful. There is so much reference and teaching material on the net now, not much else is needed, plus it's always best to use local materials as much as possible. I assume you're teaching children, so stamps, coins, pictures of your country's native animals and attractions would be useful.

When you say "Asia" and "overseas" do you mean China? It would be helpful if you told us your destination city and which age group you will be teaching. Some things such as dictionaries you can get at decent bookstores in many Chinese cities. DVD's mostly and VCD's are the standard here. My school's old tape player which was for a different standard wouldn't play the tapes I brought.

Bring yourself socks, socks and socks, plenty of them. Embarassed Bring me some too.

China and I guess Korea use a different format to the US: if recorded in Korea should be OK in China, but you have to find a machine.
