Almost finished doing a stint in Korea...
anyone know of a solid visa (without attending University or doing migrant work) for Americans?
I know the working holiday doesn't apply to us, and I'd like to stay in Melbourne (playing music, working construction, waiting tables...) for around 6 months.
Any advice is greatly appreciated....cheers. |

I know that it might not suit you but I understand that New Zealand is allowing 1500 people from the USA to apply for a work holiday visa (a one year visa). I believe you'd need to be between 18 and 30 to apply. |

thanks for the info....New Zealand would be great, but I'd be meeting my buddies in Melbourne to play music with em.
If I get a tourist visa (3-4months?), can I just leave the country (to NZ) and come back for another two? any info you ESLers....
cheers. |

As far as I know it would be ok for you to leave and come back again but you would have to renew your visa. That could be done in NZ. Unless you have a multi-entry visa which allows you to come and go. |

You can get a work holiday visa for up to a year the only stipulation is that you cannot work at the same institution for more than 6 months. There are PLENTY of English Language schools you can work at easily found in the local paper. I'm an American currently working at an English language school. Oh yeah and they pay is good... |

An ETA (electronic transit authority) is valid for a year from the time of purchase. You can get one from here http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ They are a multiple entry visa and valid for your current passport only (The passport number, name and date of birth must match). You can also get an ETA from the airport as well but depending on yourself it's probably better to get one beforehand.
You are not allowed to work on an ETA so it's at your own risk if you decide to do so.
Usually you will need an outward ticket to show you can leave Australia before they let you board the plane but this can vary depending on how diligent the airline you are flying with is. If no ETA then you won't be able to get a boarding pass... or you might get deported if you managed to get there without one...
Kiwi's don't need ETAs, we have a special policy with Australia. Everyone else need one of those or a normal visa though. If you go to NZ for a holiday then carry your tickets for going back home with you just in case the airport staff ask... They should, the airline gets fined if you get deported from AU (which does happen) and Air NZ and Qantas are pretty strict on that. |

Melbourne has a real lot of teaching work. However most of the work is through private tuition. I started tutoring here a couple of years ago and now have my own office and a great client base. If you would like to learn how to do this, I would be more than happy to show you how to advertise and get students relatively quickly. Just PM me or give me a call on 0427 024 369. |
