so... I love Japan and everything, but I don't know what to make of....
free advertising leaflets in the mail (inotherwords, freely available legal stuff) that feature violent imagery towards women, and, worse, "sexual" imagery of 11-year-old girls.
When the *beep* did that become OK?
What is being done to try to stop it?
How much chance does it have of being stopped?
When is the revolution (women's liberty and freedom) going to happen?
I just don't know what to think of a place that allows near-child-porn in the mail.
What is the go with that? Can it be stopped? Do people want it stopped?
What do Japanese think about this issue??
and, come to mention it, when are public toilets in every public building going to stop having the men first and the women way down the corridor?
When are men going to stop treating the whole country, MIDDLE of shotengais and all, in the middle of the day, like their open sewer.... a true "man's land"... a land where you can piss wherever the hell you want, whenever you want... facing traffic in the middle of the day.. no problem... because it's "man's land".
To cut a long story short... why am I getting near-child-porn pamphlets in the mail? What kind of a country allows this? |

I saw something similar featuring 15 year olds in bikinis. I asked my Japanese female friend who was in her 60s what she thought of it. She said that she'd be proud to have her daughter pose like that. It means she's beautiful. I said, "but she's only 15. She's still a child." She said, 'no, she's not a child. Her body has developed into a woman's body."
I also saw on an afternoon TV show, I think it was Warate ii tomo, which featured an elementary school girl (6th grade) and her large chest. The giggling bowing mother stood next to her bikin clad daughter while the male host got a very good look to comment "sugoi ne"
I try not to think about it too much, because when I do I get so confused and disgusted trying to understand it. |

Different culture, different attitudes.
The only thing to be had out of judging something like this too closely is a headache on your part. Just accept it and tell yourself this is probably how some of the more conservative people from the middle east feel when they come over to the West for the first time. |

A LONG time ago.

Nothing as far as I know.

Practically nil.

No offense, but what planet are you from? Japan's culture is vastly different from the west, ESPECIALLY when it comes to treatment of women. I used to say that it very generally followed some trends of the west by about 30 years. That would mean that right now is time for bra burning and changes in certain civil liberties. Well, in a sense that is slowly happening with women-only train cars, SOME sexual harassment charges, more refusal to accept chikans on trains, etc. But, not much else.

Without seeing it, I can only guess that it is not truly child porn, but your perception of it. No offense.

This would be a nice thing to write in a letter to the editor of the Japan Times, but don't expect much more than you're going to get here.

Much like what Lynn wrote. Showing skimpy clothing, cleavage closeups, and other things (NOT kiddie porn, mind you) on TV and posters is normal here, based on centuries of cultural history. Showing sexual and/or violent stuff in manga is also normal. You don't have to like it, but to expect radical changes to suit western morals is silly at best.
How long have you lived here? |

The Diet passed legislation outlawing child pornography several years ago (several years behind most other countries mind you), so what you saw was either illegal or not actual child porn but pictures of adults masquerading as underage children. |

Just so you know, Japanese erotic manga or "shunga" has been around for a couple of centuries. Almost anything goes these days but they are a bit prudish about pubic hair, though this has become more common in magazines in the last 10 years.
PS I dont know anything about elementary school girls and developed bosoms but it fits in with a trend to try and make little adults out of pre-adolescent children, including make-up for pre-teen girls and making girls sexually attractive at younger and younger ages. You have girls of twelve and thirteen performing enjo kosai and sexual favors in Japan. |

I have been here 8 years and I have never seen anything like the OP is saying! I get the flyers and they always look 18 and over to me.
How old was Britney Spears when half the world was watching her rather erotic videos and shuffling like a madman?
I think that Japan aint much different in some respects than any other country. Most men like to look at young attractive girls. And as regard to how they do it; as another poster alluded to, Japan is far closer to the west than the west is to the middle east.
I'd choose openess and freedom over censorship and puritanical anyday. |

dude oh dude oh dude!
I'm talking about "sexual" imagery of freakin 11-year-old girls, in PORN leaflets!
You think that's perfectly fine n dandy, do ya?
uhhh, I said it's not freakin child-porn.
I said purposely "near-child-porn".
My perception of it ...is that it was in a PORN leaflet!! 11
This is so not about western morals.....
It comes down to... do you, and vast majority of Japanese, think "imagery" of 11-year-old girls in sex pamplets is OKdokey?

man... first of all, I never said it was "actual child porn". Secondly, the girl was shown to be 11. Another was presented to be 15. No way in hell was the "11-year-old" an adult masquerading |

that's a good point. However, "different culture" or not, there is a line.
Is it OK to have sensual imagery of 11-year-old Japanese girls IN sex leaflets?

If one goes through life accepting what others see or believe they see as reality then you are making a mistake.
Who is to say what the general tone of this tv show was? Even if it happened at all. I dont watch much J tv at all but again I have never seen such a thing. And I have never seen anything like the OP is suggesting. A mother gleefully standing by as national tv presents her 11 yr old child up for sexual titilation.
I also bet that if the OP were to take a digital pic of the flyer and post it here the girl would look like a 18 year old Japanese girl.
Remember 18 compared to a western 18 can seem young, but of course for Japan it isnt as its the westeren that looks older as it is the norm here.
Again, I choose freedom. I have no problem with 18 year olds doing what ever they like. The law considers them adult and so do I. If they happen to still be at high school, so what? |

Unless you actually scan the flyer and post it on here then it really is hard to make a judgement of it. I don't watch too much Japanese TV anymore (not since getting cable) but I have to admit that I was disappointed by the tameness of what I did see. The show where a guy demonstranted how to do particular bondange techniques on a practically naked woman was quite interesting though! That was however after 12 am I think. Just remember that Japanese attitudes towards this kind of stuff can be quite different from ours. For example a couple of days ago in the local PARCO, they had a bit of a photography shoot for children. You would not believe the line up of whored-up children who were there to get their pictures taken in typical Japanese poses. And their mothers were standing right behind them in line-they thought it was the cutest thing. |
