I have heard that they eat horse meat in Japan. Where can one go to try such a meat.

Sometimes they have it in izakayas. There's one by my house that has horse sashimi. It's on the menu between the french fries and the pizzas.

I've eaten it a few times, both in karage form and raw (ba-sashi). It's quite the delicacy and quite tastey if you get the good stuff. Quite popular in parts of Kyushu, but I've eaten it in Yamanashi-ken, where it's a local specialty, especially at some onsen resorts. Best enjoyed with a nice bottle of cold sake.

If you go to a traditional Izakaya, you can ask if they have any basashi. It tends to be a little bit pricey but definitely not unaffordable.

I like it, but have only been drawn to order it on special occasions...

Ya, I think horse is like any other meat. You get various grades of quality. The really good quality (marbled, melt in your mouth variety) horse is usually served as ba-sashi, and the lesser quality stuff served as karage. I've seen the karage style sell for as low as 500 Yen per serving at izakaya.

OP, next time you go to a decent izakaya, ask if they have some, it's sometimes not on the menu. But before ordering, be sure to be clear on the price.

You can also find it at some Yaki-niku restaurants in the raw form (basashi). Its quite good and suprisingly tender and not chewy. Alsmost like sashimi. Give it a try!

If you're ever in Tokyo, go to Ueno. There is a restaurant that has horse meat right outside of the National Museum. It's reasonably prices (not cheap, but if is affordable).
