So i will be travelling in Thailand for the month of September and was wondering if anyone had some good places to begin my job search. I am going to be starting in Chiang Mai and continuing on to Phuket and other Islands. I love Koh Phi Phi as I have been there before but I highly doubt there is any opportunities there. Specifically what I am looking for is reputable companies/schools and even recruiters to start with...

If you are an absolutely decent fellow/girl, St. John's "University" (http://www.stjohn.ac.th/lc/)(Bangkok) has a good program, lots of time off, great pay and very amenable people to work with. Plus they are down a couple of tchr (bereavement, etc.)
I loved my time there and James (HofCtr) and Scot (Asst.) who are Br. (which I never held against them) are great guys and have been there for years so they do know what they are doing. Good luck! |

I'm another lad that's seriously considering the jump to Thailand. Would only be after X-mas though.
In China I was able to find decent work fairly easily with only a TESL Certificate.
Never been to University.
I'm wondering if the same would apply in BKK, or Pattaya.
I know nothing is garanteed but anyone care to venture some odds?

| ^ Nah Kent it all boils down to (okay some of the points are relevant but you could have a million points and if you answer this question wrong)...will you work for x amount an hour? No??? Then it don't matter how well qualified you are 99% of the time. |

Speaking of privates, do most of the contracts prohibit you from teaching privates? What are the going rates? Is it illegal to teach privates without the proper visa. I know it is in countries such as Taiwan, Korea and Japan. If my questions seem redundant, I'm sorry. Please post a link to a thread or site because I would sure like to know.
When I was in Thailand on vacation, there were quite a few people who asked me to teach them privately and I wouldn't because I didn't know the regularities. I'd sure hate to find myself inside of a Thai jail  |

Thanks Kent! So when you say "quietly," you mean don't advertise or make business cards? I know this might sound silly but what if a police officer asks you to teach him? This happened to me and I didn't know if this was some sort of sting operation  .
I don't know if I should start a new topic on teaching privates in Thailand, but I was curious anyway. I might be going back to Thailand on another vacation in October and I will most likely see the same people I saw a few months ago. So, 500-1000 baht per hour is the going rate. I'd say if you had a few regular privates, that could really add up. |
