I'm currently teaching at a uni in Taiwan and wonder about teaching at the same kind of gig in the philipines. I've got a TESOL MA and lots of exp., so I guess I'd be qualified. I know there's not a big demand for TESOL there, but I'd think at a uni it might be different. Anybody have any info on this...? My girl's filipina, so I'd like to know my chances...getting a job, not my chances with her. Thanks!

Brooks

^ Hi Brooks

Based on my 2 years' experience in The Philippines,

I'd say your chances are better at an International School.

Universities in the Philippines tend to hire from within their own ranks;

International Schools will and do hire foreigners with proper K12 credentials.

If you apply at an international school, do it BEFORE you get there

since they almost never hire people who are already in-country.

If that's too much of a hassle, there are language schools (like Berlitz)

in Manila and ample opportunities teaching expats (Japanese, for example)

but you'll need to be patient & willing to network from within those expat communities

through word of mouth, i.e. a friend who knows a friend who needs a teacher, etc

in order to work your way up to a full schedule & something approaching

what we'd call a comfortable standard of living.

To be brutally honest ...

you'd be better off financially if you kept your job in Taiwan

& spent your holidays & summer breaks in The Philippines.

It's a wonderful country for spending money;

not so wonderful when it comes to earning it.

I was thinking the same thing. Particularly with a university job in Taiwan. It is SO close, you could fly to Philippines on any days off.. plus most likely, paid vacations for 3-5 months, right?
