We had a thread a while back about some of the crazy names Chinese students take out of the dictionary and use as their English name. It is not my intent to replay that thread although some of you may wish to do so.

My purpose in bring this up again is to advise that there is a really great web site that I have printed out to use this next semester. www.mikesart.net/giantglossarycom/ref/names/names

I intend to have all of my students write their English name on a large piece of paper using a black felt tip marker. We will then have a discussion about when, how and why they got their name. Dictionaries will be mandatory!

Then those with English words for names will be provided a list of English names and instructed to pick a real name.

Then for the fun part. Since we have a new English Department computer lab and every course has a lab component, the students will be required to search the net for the origin and meaning of their English name. Some may want to change their name again after that exercise!

Oh yes, the new computer lab is for the exclusive use of the business English majors. A first for this Province! A real prize for this 3rd tier college. The top tier unis do not even have such a thing.

Hi Cobra
Good idea, I do try to discouraged the girls from adopting the name Fanny. I like to give my boys names of Roman generals, Titus is one of my favourites.
Cheers Carol

Carol I always appreciate your posts. You are such a lovely person!!!

Not to be rude but did you know that Titus was reportedly "hung like a donkey"? I read that somewhere, sometime back.
