Hi again everyone -
Been a bit since I posted last, as I've been waiting for a reply from the eikaiwas, but I'm happy to report that the boy and I have been accepted by ECC, and will be leaving for "somewhere in Kinki" around Nov. 9th. Hence, a few questions. I've been doing my research on the boards here, and have noted that the question of compies has been mostly addressed with "sticking a laptop in your carry-on and proceeding onwards."
However, I am determined to get my PC to Japan with me, especially if I'm looking at a year and a half to two years. I saw Jim's post on getting his computer back to Canada on occasion, but I wanted to make sure that would work for getting my computer to Japan, or whether it would make more sense to ship it via FedEx/UPS/something-something. I could also disassemble it and put it all in anti-stat bags*, but that still worries me about it getting slammed around by baggage handlers, despite being padded with my clothing, etc. What would you recommend, given my goal, and am I just being silly to be scared of how my disassembled compy would fare in my checked luggage?
*I'd just empty out the case, put it in my other suitcase, and fill it with clothes/sundries.
Thanks in advance for all advice you have. I know most would say I should just buy a laptop, but I invested a lot in building this compy to suit my specifications (graphics editing, artwork, 3d stuff...play World of Warcraft like a giant geek) and I'm super-unwilling to part with it.
I should also add that while taking it apart will be easy enough, I had help putting it together...so uh. If anyone knows if there are places in Japan that would be happy to help me re-assemble it (or people on this board who will subsequently be paid in dinner and cookies) then the idea of taking it apart gets much more viable... |
