Weird, i bumped into an old friend yesterday. he is off to Canakkale to teach for a year, so there are jobs.
I used to live in that part of the world. Be warned, the winters are grim. |

Ty dmb. I would be interested in knowing how he gets on. It's the wind that makes it tough so they say. |

He is an old friend from about a decade ago, but I should be able to dig out an email address for him. He is off to be a head teacher there. I didn't ask if it was a dershane, lise, kolej.
I used to live just up the coast and it's the dampness that gets you in the winter. Plus everywhere is shut, or just plain dead. |

Hi there dmb & Sophos..
I'm not sure if I am the guy that you bumped into last year who was off on his way to anakkale...but here I am!
Now I just spent all afternoon writing you guys a detailed reply concerning anakkale & the course I work for. But spent too long writing it and was logged off the site when trying to post it and lost it in cyberspace!! (gRRrR)
So I'll have to rewrite again!!!!
but I have a lesson now So you'll just have to wait till tomorrow. Sorry.
but you can contact via email or messenger if you want:

All the best
& yes anakkale Sucks in the winter BUT there are lot's of reasons for working here...I'll fill you in tomorrow. I never want to teach in Istanbul again...This is the nicest course I've ever worked in.

I have worked in places that paid very well but had a very bad atmosphere or that saw students as Money Cows to be milked.
The reason I like the school I work for is that it's small & that they treat the teachers with respect. They are positive and will go out of their way to help. The Manager here doesn't sit around all day behind his desk giving orders or giving the staff hell like a lot that I have come accross.
He teaches lessons, helps fixes stuff around the building chat's to everyone & makes the students feel happy & welcome. He doesn't drag teachers in for pointless meetings or workshops on their days off and doesn't close classes because of low numbers. He also stands up for the teachers when the bosses try to pass some stupid new rule or policy.
The school is also nice...It has a brand new internet room...(and yes it is connected to the internet!) air conditioned...which a projector that students can use when they want.
Friendly staff with exception of one batty cleaning lady.
Of course the pay's not great compared to Istanbul! Then again Maybe it is. I was paying 500 mil for a one bedroom flat in Istanbul and earning 1.500 mil. This year I earn 2 milyar and pay 500 mil for a three bedroom flat...So my standards have gone up here.
Also everyday living is much cheaper as well.
You can sit by the sea front and have a beer for 3 mil! So it's cheap.
I don't think that you'd save any money working here but you'd live well and have a pleasant laid back teaching year.
PS: Get in touch Golightly |

I was earning that10 years ago.
Wages have stood still.
Honestly, do you really think that less than 700 pounds a month is good even if you live in the sticks.
I lived in the sticks ten years ago and earned the same. |

Thrifty....
Yes....I agree that wages have stood still here in Turkey. Maybe it's time to move on. I knew what I was getting into when I agreed to work in anakkale for a lower wage than I would have gotten in Istanbul...but then again I had my reasons...(My girlfriend wanted to come here) So I don't mind really. Sometimes a positive environment is more important than money. That's how I feel at the moment. After 13 years in the fast lane in Istanbul...anakkale is a welcome change...
+ my cat is happy to have such a huge flat and a nice garden to hang out in all day...
all the best thrifty dude |
