I don't know if I am allowed to post this here, but I am feeling positively wonderful tonight, I have not felt so happy in my short time in Japan so far. Hope you won't begrudge a guy to share his happy, harmless little thoughts.

Today I find myself more and more loving this little city with nothing going on. The day to day life is so me, for lack of a more eloquent means of describing it.
Little things, I have always been big on the little things, whether good or bad. Things like the strange aquaintances you make. Kimura at the bank, for some reason always the one on duty when I go in with a bill to pay or a question about a bank notice. The City Library, and the Library Manager, who will always make an appearance if I walk through the doors, and has even offered to buy more English books for the library if the selection there currently is not to my liking. Family Mart late night employees that know me instantly and always smile more than is necessary when I come in the door at midnight most nights while out roaming restlessly and in the need of an apple pastry and a Blendy.
Or the little places, little landmarks I have created, and named in such a manner that no one else, no matter how familiar with the city, would ever be able to recognise from the names. "Scorpions Park" I pass every day, yet have never even walked through, as it is not even a park, just a vacant lot, and I doubt there is even a single scorpion there, regardless it is Scorpions Park to me. "The Orochi House", "The 10 Minute Light" and "Portland-Dixon Street" are some more of the creations of my mind, names I familiarised with in my settling in, now names that are entrenched in my impression of what has become MY city.
All the little things that mean so much to someone like me. I love them, I love Izumo. I don't anymore feel the desire to escape what I labelled a gilded cage. No more thoughts of desperate escapes to Osaka or Nagoya. A simple ride to Matsue satisfies me, and the knowledge I am home in Izumo. I have a home. I love that feeling. |

- Nice ! and I can totally relate, being a a smaller town myself .. Spent the first few `months` taking a long time to settle in and even hating it at times, - was not having a good time. It took time, getting to know people and places and a visit to Osaka to make me appreciate the town and to feel more at home here ... - for now !! Interesting huh ...

I have just moved to a smaller city and a short trip beyond the residential bits takes me into fields of nachi and chestnuts. I am only a 5 minute walk from a railway station so still able to get away easily when necessary. I am hopeful that I will soon have the same feelings about my home as the OP, but I have already started naming the streets... My favourite, (but not because I play) is Pachinko street!  |

Thanks so much for sharing those thoughts, I really enjoyed reading it. I have just moved to a smallish town myself but I have to admit I had no problems with it being smaller than say Osaka or Nagoya, for most of those reasons that you mentioned. Here's hoping I feel as comfortable as you do!
