Depending on where you live, can you get a reasonably good apartment for about NT10,000 per month? If so, is this possible in Taipei and where?
I'd rather not room. |

Here is the "terrible" view from the 1 bedroom, 2 floors, 2 bathrooms, etc apt. that my gf and I share for $10,000/month. Keep in mind we do live in Kaohsiung so rent is a bit cheaper.

Gosh, that's just fantastic! I know that Kaohsiung is cheaper though, as is the South or Taiwan. Views don't concern me, though I'm glad to see you've found such a great deal. |

Is that $10,000 TOTAL rent for the 1 bedrooom or your 1/2 of the rent splitting with the g/f?
Is it hard to find that deal for 1 bedroom apts. in Kaohsiung?
Any advise where to look? |

A Taiwanese friend helped me find my room. It may not be "reasonably good" for you because it's only about the size of a dorm room with a bath but no kitchen. But it's what I wanted. I pay 7000 a month plus electric. (In Hsinchu). I would never have found it on my own. If you can get help from someone who lives here and knows the area you'll probably do a lot better than just looking by yourself.

Ouch. That seems high for what you are getting MC. I live in Taipei and pay 15,000 for three bedrooms nestled in quiet mountains. 5 minutes from the MRT. I could easily rent out 2 rooms and live for free. I opted to live with my g/f instead and she covers 6000 of the rent. So, I am paying 9000 for a 3 bedroom place 5 minutes from the MRT. The way I understand it, for 10,000 anywhere outside of Taipei County, you could probably live in a 4 floor villa with 6 balconies, private parking, etc....
Both MomCat and Wally seem to be paying more than is neccessary.
I am thinking of moving to Shen Keng, home of ChoDoFu Lu. I am looking for a 15,000 NT villa. Still, only 10 minutes from MRT.
Wally, I must say though, your view kicks butt. |

TS, You're probably right about being able to get a room for less. But there is no MRT here and few busses. Where I live is just a few minutes walk from the downtown bus, the Science Park shuttle and a long distance bus station. I'm near a university so there are restaurants and shops nearby for everything except my Western food fix. I wanted cheap and convenient. For convenience I needed to pay more.
My point wasn't that I have the cheapest place possible, it was that I wouldn't have found this place (which is ideal for me) on my own. I had help from someone who knows the city and speaks the language. |

Yes and yes. The only advice I have about this subject is to not even think about going it alone. Take a friend to a neighbourhood you like and have them find the board (usually by the schools) that everyone posts their notices on. Give your friend your phone and have him/her do everything else. Including the negotiating.
One other piece of advice. Don't be afraid to ask for things. Landlords don't want to lift a finger or go out of pocket. But if you need painting done and can do it yourself, they'll most likely allow you to deduct the cost from the rent.
Ours is actually to the point where we can hire pros to do the work as well. |

True the view is pretty sweet, but the price isnt that bad either since i split the $10000/mth with my gf, so we pay $5000 each/month. (Thats even less than you Toe!!! )
We have friends in the same complex who have 3 bedroom apts with less open floor space and they are paying closer to $20000/mth, so I think we are getting an awesome deal. Not to mention, in Kaohsiung, with the smog being so bad a lot of the time, being right on the lake the way we are, the air is A LOT cleaner, and the temperature is ALWAYS about 3-4 degrees cooler than in the city core. |

Wow so may girlfriends sharing the rent!!!
If you could get just one more girlfriend to move in with you , you wouldn't have to pay any rent! Then if you added another girlfriend you could just stay at home and drink TW beer and Kao Liang and watchy TV!
Ooops, I forgot, this isn't Thailand. My bad. |
