| I've been considering changing over from Korea to Japan next month, but I've heard some bad things about the job market in October. I'd like to work as an ALT in Tokyo if at all possible, but I'd rather just wait until March or April if my chances of finding this kind of work are extremely low. What would be the best bet here? Do I have a shot at ALT work now? |

| Your best bet is to come in February. Better yet, come as soon as possible, get set up, learn some Japanese, and hit the ground running for the next school year when jobs start opening up. |

Ya, I think aside from the obvious (ie, keep an eye on the postings week-to-week), it may be useful to know that many ALT contracts begin in early September at the end of the school summer break - start of new semester. It's not completely uncommon for new ALTs to decide after a month or two this Japan gig isn't for them, so some do simply leave unexpetedly, leaving a vacancy to be filled. I knew a couple new ALTs that did in my prefecture in October. But most who do plan this course of action wait at least until the Xmas break to take the "midnight train" out of Japan.
Your best bet might be to get over here via a private eikaiwa school, do a short-term gig until the new school year, begin applying for ALT work in late January.

Japan isn't like Korea; the visa system isn't a complete scam by hagwon owners to control their slaves. 
You don't have to worry about begging your wonjong for a letter of release, you don't need to leave the country in order to change visa status, and you may not even have to change your visa status (depending on what exactly you are doing). It's totally possible to quit one job and start another, all on the same work visa.
If you really want to come to Japan in October, then come here. Get a job in an eikaiwa, or wherever you want to, and then apply for ALT jobs when they come up (should you still want to). |
