What exactly is the deal with going to Mexico these days?
I've been in Asia for the past six years. Lived in Oaxaca before that, and I'd sort of like to go back. I'm mostly concerned about how much the FMT costs these days, if I can take my car (and how much hassle that would be), and if I need a passport (I didn't use to). My passport had to get more pages put in so I may not get it back for six weeks.
Also, does anyone know what the teaching scene is like in Oaxaca City these days? Is there work? If so, where might I look?

Let's see:
- the cost for an initial FM3 is just shy of 2000 pesos (about $200 US). To renew is slightly cheaper; about 1700 pesos yearly.
- someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe one must drive across the border with your FM3 in hand to import your personal vehicle
- I'm pretty sure a passport is mandatory for you to obtain an FM3

TEFL work in Oaxaca City has been slim pickings for the last couple of years, and with the protests there now the teaching situation is even worse. The rest of the state has a fair bit of work though.

I think the FMT tourist card cost 150 pesos, and is included in the price of a flight so only land crossers pay it, but I haven't had one in so long that could be completly wrong... If you are going past the boarder zone I'd recommend a passport, but US citizens still don't technically need one. Like LS said, if you want to change from and FMT to an FM3 you will need a passport, even if you are American. The car is your decision, you can bring it in on a tourist visa, it may be a lot of hassel as car ownership is anywhere, some people think its worth the hassel (I do because I have my outfitted with child saftey seats).

The FMT is at $21 usd, and like Melee notes, is usually in your flight price.

As far as I understand, Americans will soon need a passport not to get into Mexico, but to return home at any time.

Quote:
No passport, no proof, no entry. Coming to an American border destination near you, this will be the law. Passports will be required for travel to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada by 2008.

If you want to come home after your vacation to these locations, youll need to bring your passport along too. Thanks to new, stricter rules that are slowly making their way to their effective dates, Americans traveling to these destinations will need to show proof of citizenship to leave and get back into the states.

Some info about bringing a car into Mexico. I'm not sure how current the FM3 info is, but it's a start...

If you are traveling by car, the $210 peso fee can be paid at any bank of your choice and needs to be paid either before you leave the country, or before you get your FM3. The temporary import permit you get for your car will be valid for as long as you have your FM3. Here is a link to the aduana site that covers off what you can bring along with you, as well as details on temporarily importing your vehicle...
