One step forward ... two steps back ... it's a maganda's world

Quote:
Turkish boys commit 'honour' crimes

A recent case was the murder of Birgul Isik, gunned down by her 14-year-old son Ramazan for apparently bringing shame on her family. She had appeared on a Turkish talk show to discuss her abusive marriage.

She had fled her violent, bigamous husband several times before. Ignored by the authorities and dismissed by her family, she agreed to appear on the Women's Voice show.

But in Turkey, domestic violence is an issue few women would dare to discuss outside the family, let alone on national television. Back in her home town, for many Birgul had crossed the line.

She had just returned to Elazig in eastern Turkey by bus, accompanied by four of her five children after taking part in the programme in Istanbul.

Ramazan was waiting for her at the bus stop. When he saw her, he shouted that she had shamed the family, pulled out a gun and shot her five times.

Birgul died in hospital three weeks later.

Apart from the obvious social tragedy, the most awful part of this is that the absolute c**t of a father convinced his young son to murder his own mother. Any man who beats his wife is a coward, but to get your own child to get rid of your wife and to take the blame for it is just the basest of human behaviour.

I say stone the b*stard!!!!!

In the short time that I have been here, I feel that my exposure to Turkish culture has been more than the average person. I was horrified to find out about these honor killings and the rate of domestic abuse here.

You know why they made the kid do it, don't you? The kid won't go to prision like his papa would have. But why ask the kids when you can ask grandma or grandpa....they are going to die soon and they will be put on house arrest anyways. If the grand folks won't do it, just put the offending family member in a room with a gun and let them off themselves!
It is not just women, they kill men too...for being gay or not wanting to marry, etc.

I found out about this stuff from my Kurdish friends. It's amazing that the Kurds have so much trouble with their political history and can still actively pursue these traditions, it is like an inter-cultural genocide.

A Turkish saying is in need of qualification ...

Quote:
Bir elin nesi var ... iki elin* sesi var ...

*tabiki el bir kadinin eli degilse

Quote:
What does one hand have ... two* have a voice

* unless one is that of a woman

As for punishing the tosser ... if they can find his balls let him be strangled by them ... stretched not severed ...

Shouldn't that be intra-cultural?

I heard the programme about this case (and others). The husband of the deceased is in prison awaiting trial for instigating the murder. If he is found guilty as charged, won't the "guilty" person be punished as opposed to the child, who is as much a victim as his mother?

I recommend that you see the award winning Yilmaz Gunay film "YOL" which explores similar themes.

The question is, of course, why are people making such TV programs and not offering the women who come on it some kind of protection?

The talk show was cancelled because of the incident, so not only has one woman lost her life but many others have lost a medium in which they can speak out about social injustice.

I think that such a talk show should be cancelled. Of course women need a platform to voice their opinions, but these talks shows are 'sesation' TV, like Jerry Springer or something. This isn't an isolated icident, and in the end the show only does such things for ratings and do nothing to protect their guests. This is too serious an issue to be dealt with by people trying to gain TV ratings.
