I've never seen that before... it was really funny! I can't understand why the lead robber tied his scarf around his nose, basically concealing nothing. Maybe to make his enunciation clearer and let viewers see his mouth, perhaps? Anyway, it was funny!
I guess in situations like this, it's best not to count on the police

That's funny as sh:t. I especially liked how they incorporated smiling jazzercise dancers into the routine.
I'm pretty sure it's a joke, but who the hell says "spare me my life?" Why not: "please don't kill me?" Maybe it's harder to dance to. And who the hell is so worried to actually practice this sort of English and then still goes on the trip?
Thug: Give me yer bag!
Woman: Take whatever you like!
Thug: Anything? Hmm .. I was just going to take your bag, but now that you mention it ...
Woman: Spare me my life!
Thug: (confused) Wha'?
Woman: (remembering her dance steps) Spare -- Me -- My -- Life!
Thug: (comprehending) Ah ... Well, I was planning on killing you to eliminate any witnesses, but since you asked so nicely and in such fine English, I guess I'll get you go.
Woman: Thank goodness for those eikaiwa lessons! |

Ya know, I don't think it IS a joke. It was a feature on Fuji Terebi -- and at the end of the segments they have some old, bald guy going over the grammar points in Japanese. Also, if you go to some of the links referred to in the cross-reference thread, and search for "zuijin girls" you will find more of the same. There's even one with the foreign muggers dancing along and chanting Japanese... TSUMARANAI-MONO-DESU-GA.... TSUMARANAI-MONO-DESU-GA.... If you have a chance to check it out, make careful note of the facial expressions on some of those guys. |

My husband thought it was a parody of the serious language programmes on NHK- he says Fuji TV sometimes does things like that. Hard to be sure though. |

That's a kind of traditional way of depicting a robber in Japan- like we imagine them with a black eyemask and maybe a prison uniform. |

Apparently it is called "kosodoro" - doro from dorobo and koso from er... kosokoso - whatever that is.
If you ever see one of these coming towards you prepare to run away or use the immortal words "好きなものもってって!"

Having recently encountered this phrase in karaoke, I believe you'll find the source is "Bohemian Rhapsody" - "Spare me my life from this monstrosity..."
Now we know where they get their material from. "Take anything you want" could be from just about anything, but I'd love to hear the song that "I was robbed by twooo men" came from... |
