Hi I have a friend who is an Italian teacher who wants to come to China. Does anyone know of schools or organisations that do Italian teaching in China, particularly in the Shanghai-Hangzhou area?

Hi there.

Not sure about the demand for anything outside of English but I would suspect that there are international schools. Do a search on the internet for the international schools. I have never even met an Italian while in China nor have I seen any requests for Italian teachers (that I can remember.)

That is not to say that there is no such demand. I am sure that there is. If he/she can get into the international schools then that might not be a bad option.

Maybe the Jiaotong University.
Italian is taught at some strategically located universities in Xi'an, Guangzhou and Peking; there must be some in Shanghai as well. Forget international schools, though!

Actually I did meet quite a lot of Italians when in China although the majority were either students or travellers. I'd suggest looking into any universities with Foreign Studies or Foreign Languages in their titles...although the jobs will be thin on the ground.

I met an Italian student who was studying Chinese in Guangzhou this previous summer but she could find very little work teaching Italian (actually don't think she found any) so instead taught kindergarten English. There is an Italian Department at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies but it doesn't seem to be very large. Your friend can always try though!

However the woman I met did say that there are far more places that offer Italian in Shanghai (which still doesn't mean a lot) and, I presume, there would be some courses in Beijing too. Other than the big cities there won't be much at all though...

The best approach may be for your friend to contact the Chinese Embassy in Rome and ask for any advice they have or to contact the Italian Foreign Office in her country.

Try Music Conservatories or Music colleges/Universities. Italian is needed for some studying in these fields.
