Hello everyone,
I am an American citizen considering a job offer in KSA. Any advise on what is considered as very good income, cost of living, do's & don'ts.
I understand the Arab culture but Saudis are more conservative.
Do American families adjust well (refering to my wife here). Can you go out and enjoy the town (I realize this is KSA), and what is there to do, outside fun in the sun.
I have been to UAE and loved it. Is life in KSA close to it.
Any advise would be appreciated |

From a quick read of your posting, I assume that you have not been offered a job in the English-teaching profession. Consequently, it would be difficult for many of us to offer you any information that you could use other than a couple of brief thoughts I will take the liberty to mention. At the risk of sounding snooty, I would suggest (with sincerity) that in the future you do couple things before asking a bunch of English teachers for their assistance.
First, learn the difference between A-D-V-I-C-E and A-D-V-I-S-E. Suffice it to say, one is a noun and the other a verb. Unless one is writing imperative sentences (where the subject is omitted completely), one may not use a verb in lieu of a noun in the subject position. The rules of English Grammar frown upon such substitutions, except, perhaps in the southeastern quarter of Oklahoma, all of Arkansas and the northern one-half of Mississippi.
Additionally, one might find it enlightening to learn the differences between sentence fragments, run-on sentences and sentences. |

Good as compared to what? What field are you in? Education? If not, we have no idea what the pay scales would be.

Some do, some don't... you know your wife better than we do.

Not sure what this means? What town? How do you define 'enjoy?'

Not really... though they do share a language, religion, and culture. Obviously expat women have more freedom of movement in the UAE since they can drive. Of course much depends on where in KSA and where in the UAE you are comparing. And it depends on what it was that you "loved" about the UAE...

Never having been an American wife, I cannot advise you. My advice would be worth nothing.
Oh no - you could learn to spell. |

I hope the cowboy comes back. I liked his post. So what if he can't spell - who cares? He sounds like a top bloke. |

Since I'm neither American nor a "wife", I have no way of knowing what your wife's priorities are. Why doesn't she ask us herself? |

I have to agree with Cleopatra, this is a very broad question, and hard for you to understand in full, since you are not your wife. There are many possibilities, its hard to generalize. I know Americans who are very happy here, and many that are not. It depends on what she is like, not what Saudi is like. Saudi is what it is, its a matter of can you and do you want to adapt or not. It also depends on what kind of lifestyle you will be leading, whether you will make a niche for yourself, what you like to do for fun etc. We really cant answer general questions like this. Have your wife ask us what it is she wants to know, and this should help out.
This is why even if I could figure out how to participate in this poll, I wouldn't know what to say.

Well, according to "Desperate Housewives" American wives have their moments but are happy overall. |
