I want to secure a TEFL job in Japan in order to earn money while learning the language and culture. I'm only 19, I have had some university, and some experience with teaching English to Japanese students (not formally).
What is the best way to go about my searching for a job? Is there any programs that take non-degree holders?
I was trying to search for a TEFL training course in Japan that maybe I could take and build some contacts but I cant seem to find any offered there.
Any advice? |

Your handle says you are from Honolulu. Is that correct? Well, if so, I'm sad to inform you that Americans without a degree are pretty much limited to only 2 ways to get work here, and it will be short term.
1) student visa (enroll in a school here first; the visa alone does not permit work, but with special permission, you can work PT)
2) cultural visa (study some craft or art under a master who is willing to sponsor you; same business applies about special permission needed for PT work)
That's it for immediate options. Other things you might consider are...
3) checking a local university to see if they have a program to send people here (probably for only a few months) on a homestay sort of program in order to teach
4) getting 3 or more years of experience teaching where you live now (this is the loophole in getting a work visa without a bachelor's degree)
5) get a bachelor's degree (usually what's needed for a work visa) |

Grrrr. Read the faq.
The simple answer is
Get an education first. |

You're limitations far out weigh your plausibility for just even initially getting over here. Once here, consider the conditions you will most likely live and work in to be rather low and undesirable.
My advice would be for you to complete a degree to not only better serve yourself for future income and career potential but also to better serve those that would be expecting quality, professional lessons from you. |
