Argentinean boyfriend November 1. We are hoping to relocate to Cordoba in February, when teaching opportunities will be opening up. I am presently in Shanghai China, teaching Japanese and Korean students at the International American School. I've been doing this for the last year and a half. The money is amazing, $30US an hour. We know that we are going to be poor in Argentina, but just how poor is what I'd like to know. I am pretty good at marketing myself, but I don't know how much I can ask hourly for private instruction. One thing is certain, I do not want to teach long hours at a language school for $3 to $5US an hour. Could you help me out on this? How much can I ask for private instruction? $8 to $10US? Thanks so much and good luck finding a tutor for your kids. Rowan Can anyone else help me out on this, besides Rory? How much are teachers earning at Language schools and how much are they able to charge for private lessons? I've read through all of the posts and I only learned that a third of a teacher's salary goes for rent. A third of what sum!?

I used to work around and about some big companies in Shanghai--and I got 30US an hour--this was 2002---in 2005, I did the same thing in Buenos Aires--and got five dollars an hour.

In Shanghai everyone seemed to get work, in BA not so--but there is still work there--but worth doing if you have been saving in Shanghai???

Well, I taught at the American High School, which is why my salary was so high. Most teachers in Shanghai work for 6000rmb a month, which works out to approximately $750US a month, before taxes!

Japan, of course, is another matter. That's where the money is. In China, you must either work at a private foreign school or tutor Japanese kids to make big bucks. Otherwise, the pay sucks!

I can't agree with that, I worked through several business English training centres in SH and made either 200 or 250 RMB an hour. Later, in another city I was paid 27 000 US a year to teach a british uni prep course, I do not have a high school teaching cert. But, as you say, a lot of the unis and language mills in shanghai offer crap wages.

I was not able to find decent pay in Arg (that doesn't mean it's not there)--I was lucky enough to do that in Chile.

I think Argentina is the best place to live in the world, if you have the money--more money than 15 pesos an hour--but then again u can survive on that
