Skype has been blocked by Etisalat , which is not good, as this was my plan to stay in touch with home. A Google search on the topic doesnt really get me anywhere, does anyone have any idea how to deal with this?
Kind regards,

How cheeky...Etisalat protecting their monopoly. There have been rumours of a 3rd party site that allows you to access whatever site you want from the UAE without being blocked. I wish I could tell you what it is...best to talk to those who manage a way to get pornography online in the UAE. |

Do a search on Skype on the various ME boards. There has been discussion of getting around blocks and they might work in the UAE... worth a look anyway. I believe it was on the Oman and/or GEneral ME board...

As of today, I'm still able to use s......, if you downloaded the newer versions, they may be blocked. I've avoided those, perhaps that why mine is still working.
Here in China we have the same problem.
You can by-pass local monopolies by using:
megaproxy.com $10.00 for 3 months, a bargain.
silentsurf.com
is another but more expensive.
There's a website that carries older versions of various downloads, google it and see if you can find it.
If not pmail me and I'll send you my files, can't guarentee they'll work but you can try it.
Good luck and support the 2nd and 1st amendments!!!! |

I also heard that older versions still work in the UAE. Can anyone confirm this? |

From what I understand, Etisilat has some new software that blocks the ports that are used by skype. Something like silent surf or other proxy servers won't help. |

Maybe it's because I'm using an older program. |

If you're using an old version of Skype that works, exactly which version is it? If the old version doesn't work, I guess that from now on, companies will have to start offering a telephone allowance to make living here more attractive.
I still can't believe what these idiots at etisalat are thinking... |

I'm not sure it's a matter of versions as I have tried a few older ones including one for a PDA (Skype for Pocket PC platform). No luck with any! If it's still working for you, start using up your credit on Skypeout (if you use it) ASAP |

Obviously they were thinking, "How can we stop these expats from using other services than ours... How can we get all the money that we can out of these people?"
Sounds like totally a win/win proposition for them...

Not really VS. There are other services out there instead of Skype. I won't mention the one I will use now as Etisalat is surely monitoring all the discussions on this topic (send me a message if you want the name of a srvice that still works here). No sense helping them in their job. As far as pc tp pc communicaton is concerned, there will always be MSN messenger which can't be messed with as it is a Microsoft product. Can Etisalat (or most companies for that matter) live without Miscrosoft support? Probably not.
IMHO, all that Etisalat has managed to do is tick us off. I have already taken measures to reduce my level of services from them (a 700 Dirhams savings a year for me). If they continue to limit us in more ways, I will cancel my home internet services and use the one I have at work (that would cost Etisalat a further 1800 Dirhams a year in lost profit). I may not mean much to them but if thousands do this, it should start hurting them more than Skype ever did. |

Looks to me as though both of these would be very easy to block because they require DNS lookups each time you use them. I'd suggest a web tunnel such as Primedius, which I have used successfully in the UAE. They can't block it effectively because, although they can block DNS lookups and outgoing connections to www.primedius.com, there is a configuration option that allows you to connect directly to a set of proxies using IP addresses. The list is dynamic, so by the time they find out what's on it and block the IPs, a new list has been generated and made available to you.
Catch 22: Since their home page is blocked in the UAE, you have to get the client from a P2P source such as LimeWire, or perhaps through the Google cache. |

megaproxy has been blocked a couple of times, but they send a new url in couple of days when you e-mail them to notify them. |
