On Sat I was coming back from the states to Chile on the 2nd half of a one way ticket and I was asked for my carnet (cedula, national ID) by the check-in clerk for American Airlines at Washington National. What???? This is the first time I have ever been asked for this, and I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't had one. Thought it was worth mentioning.

When I asked the woman why she asked me for it, she said, Chile requires a ticket back out of the country.

So I don't know if they are cracking down or what, but just a warning for anyone trying to enter Chile on a one way or the 2nd half of a round trip.

i was worried about this too before i arrived on a 1-way ticket in september. i had no probs other than my cases going awol for 2 days. ive no idea how long id have had to wait had i not gone down to the airport to pick it up in person as it'd been sitting there for over a day despite them having my address and phone number.

i was prepared in case they asked me for my return ticket to say that i was travelling and would continue overland up to north america where id stay with friends. dont know if they'd have accepte dthis but plenty of people much come into chile by air but leave by road.

dont know if youve seen that budget air travel has arrived in chile. see the brazilian airline gol for dirt cheap flights to buenos aires and rio.
