I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for nice holiday towns in Turkey? I was thinking a holiday in the mountains might be fun in Autumn, has anyone been to Rize? I don't really want to stay in a hotel, but maybe a nice bed & breakfast or a cottage.

Which, one woudl assume, is the reason she's asking for advice about where to go on holiday.

I suggest Kapadokia!

I haven't been, but I have friends who went to Sapanca several times. It's by a large lake and they said it was nice and relaxing. There's a train from Haydarpaşı(To Adapazarı) and Sapanca should take an hour.

Ask your students about Sapanca, see what they know. Gee, now I'm tempted to go there meself....quick little weekender outta town to refresh...hmmmm

http://www.about-turkey.com/tourism/izmit.htm
"A few kilometers away at Lake Sapanca, quiet restaurants and hotels line the lakeshore. Istanbulites escape to this retreat in the Saman Mountain basin througnout the year. The Arifiye Forest on the highlands of Lake Sapanca has nice camping and picnic areas and an excellent panoramic view of the lake below."

"The land extending towards the Black Sea coast, on the two sides of the same named river which flows into this sea, is Sakarya, in the center of which lies the fertile plain of Adapazari. This wide meadow in the middle of the region seems like an island, surrounded by the branches of the feeding rivers.
In this province filled with natural beauty is the charming site of Lake Sapanca, 5 kms south of Adapazari. If you stop by the Arifiye Forest, in the province, which is a lovely resting spot, it is possible to see the really beautiful scenery of Lake Sapanca. Besides its panoramic view, this place offers opportunities for water sports and possesses fine accommodation facilities. "

If you have the time I'd recommend the South East, especially Mardin and Nemrut dag.

I put my vote in for Kapadokya and Bozcaada, for entirely different reasons (one wet and windy, one dry and clear, one island, one central anatolya, one seafood, one guvec, one rock formations and caves, one cute little greeky vineyardy beachiness, etc, etc). They both rock.
