Quick question -- IMSS stands for ____________? Is it the same thing people refer to by "El Seguro?" The public health insurance? Thanks.

The IMSS hospital in Merida looks nice, too, especially compared to the "free" hospital here. Many of the doctors who work at the IMSS hospital are the same doctors who work at expensive private hospitals and clinics in this city. However, general care and attention at IMSS isn't all that great, I suspect mainly because of the ratio of patients to health care providers and the nightmarishly bureaucratic processes involved.

I just spent the last couple of days looking in on a friend/co-worker who was in a car accident. It took three hours to get her admitted to the IMSS hospital, another three hours before she was taken for x-rays. They didn't have enough "placas" to take the x-rays but someone in radiology recognized her and scrounged some up.) A couple of hours later she finally had her head stitched up. Twelve hours later they did a CAT scan. (I guess it's a good thing she wasn't hemorraging because she could have bled out by that time.) The first night they didn't have enough pain medication to go around and there weren't enough beds so the less injured/ill were sitting on the floor all night. As we speak, she's still in the emergency room because there are no beds in the hospital.

My son was born in an IMSS hospital and I swore then that I would never set foot in another one again and it seems nothing's changed.

It's possible my expectations are too high but I would expect the IMSS to be better equipped...especially considering what we pay every quincena and what our respective schools pay out on top of that.
