Hey guys well I am off to Peru before too long and I am trying to decide what I need to bring with me. I will get heaps of English stamps and stickers and those funny little spring-loaded koalas - everybody loves them! I will take lots of photos with me. What teaching resources do you wish you had brought with you?

Should I stock up on work clothes here? Or is it easier to just buy them there? I am pretty small only 158cm and Aus size 6-8 which I think is a US 4.

Girls - can you get decent bras over there? I need some new bras but was thinking if they are ok there then I may as well wait until I get there. The less I have to transport the better.

Of course my vegemite is already on the list. Yum!

Bring Blutack. And if you use tea tree oil, bring lots of that. Make your vegemite in a plastic jar, or you can get the tubes, which travel very well, just double wrap them in plastic bags, because even if they're not open, they make your clothes smell. On a normal spreadage of vegemite, one tube lasts me about a year, given that I'm only a weekend imbiber. Wink In Colombia you can get Milo, not sure about in Peru.

I'm about the same height as you but an Australian size 10, and I get medium or large size clothes here! Shocked The thing I find sometimes is that I can't get cotton clothes as easily, especially when buying my work costume. Luckily the weather in Bog is not too hot, but polyester still sucks!

And good luck! Smile

Lozwich.

Hi Lunachick!

In terms of food, bring curry powder cos I am down to half a jar!! You can get Milo here, if that's important to you.

As you are just a little 'un you shouldn't have problems getting clothes to fit - but the quality leaves a lot to be desired. As do the colours - lime green and orange tops anyone?

Shoes tend to have huge heels and have been known to elicit the response - what the f*** when held up to show a friend. So if you have a fave pair of shoes for work or play, I'd bring those.

In terms of teaching resources, books are hideously expensive here so if you have any favourite books bring those. That goes for your own reading material too.

Anything with Aussie novelty value always goes down well - the koalas will be adored. I'd also bring some kind of national sports shirt to wear with pride on appropriate days.

You know where to find me if you have any other questions

Vegemite in a tube - that has to be one of the best inventions ever! I will stock up on curry powder for you, no worries.

I was thinking that the clothes available may not be my style, but then you mentioned lime green and orange! My entire wardrobe is stocked with lime green and orange. I am going to fit right in! Hmm I may pick up a few bits and pieces here first.

Loz I had heard that blutac was virtually unknown in SA. That was already on my list.

Keepwalking as an English lass you may be well placed to answer this one. Good quality tea? Bring some with me? I don't mind manzanilla, but sometimes I just crave a good earl grey.

Thanks for your help guys.

Earl Grey is available in Lima and as someone is normally down there every few weeks we have a regular supply route. If only we could find a way to get supplies of Dairy Milk chocolate.

We do have Peruvian blu-tac in school! Unfortunately it's only similarity with the real thing is the colour. It is more like blue chewing gum that has been chewed on for a week. It is incredibly sticky in your hands and then loses all 'tac' as soon as it hits the wall.

Top of the list of things we miss here is cheese that melts - but that doesn't pack easily! Also, packet sauces like gravy. Sunday roasts are not the same without it.

Now I'm hungry so am off to get a sandwich...

Wanna make a bet? I recently got a shipment of Sainsbury's Extra Mature Cheddar from a pal who went to England. Don't forget, the cargo hold isn't heated, so everything is the same temperature as the air outside.

By the way Loz, where in Australia are you from? If you are a surfy chick, I can definitely confirm that there is awesome surf in Trujillo.

Eastern seaboard, and yes, oceany/swimmy/snorkelly/surfy chick. Seriously envious of you going to Trujillo, especially since I live 2600m above sea level, and a LOOOONG way from the ocean. But hey, at least I live in a city where you can get curry spices from various parts of Asia. Laughing

>The bras are good here and cheap as well. The clothes are usually tight and made for short people, so if you're tall you might have problems finding stuff that fits.

Ok so bras I can buy there, decent tea is in Lima. Bring clothes (not so into lime green and orange), bring vegemite, bring curry powder. Done and done.

Think I will bring a good supply of my comfy Bonds knickers. Every good Aussie girl uses them. Loz will know what I am talking about.

Loz I am from the Sunshine Coast.

I was actually going to mention bringing your own undies! I don't know about in Peru, but in Colombia and Mexico, in general the women have different shaped bottoms to me. Nothing like a pair of Bonds grundies to fit my curvy butt into! Laughing

Ooh, a chick thread! How can anyone eat Vegemite? Some of my earliest memories involve throwing away my Vegemite sandwiches in kindergarten. Pining for Carlton Cold or Cadbury Turkish Delight I could understand, but Vegemite? How revolting!

Smile
