(I realise this thread is for the non natives)
I came simply because the first job I was offered was in Akcay. I came here blissfully ignorant.
students in the past often were surprised I didn't come here for the history, food, nature, girls, etc. I came here because I saw an ad in the guardian, sent off a CV, had a telephone interview and got offered a job.
What's your story? |

Saw an ad in the intl guardian during the last week of my TEFL course for English Fast. It offered money, free accomodation, teacher training and free flights. That was what I wanted. A friend of mine on the course offered me his phonecard and urged me to call now and not wait till I got home. I was in Turkey 10 days or so later. Knew nothing about the place but just wanted a job. |

I had been a young do-gooder all up and down the central american coast, I got burnt out at the ripe old age of 21. A friend of mine was working in the JET program over in Japan, saving something like 10,000 USD/mth.
I said, who needs to be poor and save the world? I'm off to be a rich english teacher! And then I found a job on the internet, and they offered to pay for the ticket, and housing, and so I came.
And, (to continue the saga) fell madly in love with the first Turk I met, and we got married a month after we met, and even tho he doesn't brush his teeth during Ramadan, I still think he's cute.
So, he's the reason I came back a second time. and, the reason I am here to stay forever. And, in conclusion, this is turning out to be much more fun than starving and saving the world.
I get to eat copious amounts of fried meat and vegs and save the Turks from themselves! hurray! |

I was going on holiday to one of the Greek islands for a week of sea sun and sand but got horribly lost. The next think I knew, I was on telly and everything. |

There was a job offer on my TEFL course. I later found out that it was one of the few places that recognised a Multi Lingua TEFL cert. I knew less than ugger ball about the place; I had visions of being in the middle of a desert, riding camels or something. |

Btw,why Akcay of all places ? |
The one teacher dershane needed a teacher because the one teacher that was there was being called up for military service. He advertised in the Guardian. He later told me that the reason he offered me the job was because I had an MA in Psychology and so did he.
Actually the school was in Edremit but I lived in Akcay. summers were great.
Same gig as Thrifty a flat, flights and a salary(6 million- it was enough to live travel and go out almost every evening(I was only 22/23)) |
