|
|
Hello, i am thinking of staying in Fethiye for a while. Does anyone on the board have some (helpful) advice they could offer me?
Is there enough in Fethiye to keep me entertained when i am not working?
Are the people (in general) friendly enough?
Thanks! |

Fethiye is EXTREMELY touristy with lots of foreign tourist waddling around. So, clubs and bars can be found, of course. A place called oludeniz(can't spell that) is next door with paragliding and a small beach and a lagoon. A place called "butterfly valley" is nearby.

In the summer months until November the place is full of tourists ans a fair number of those brits who bought property there. In the cooler months its a lot quieter and most places close down so you may have less spare time distractions than you would like .Try joining some of the local activity groups to releive the boredom or you might end up drinking yourself into an early grave . Out of courisity where do you intend to work ? |

I just got back from Fethiye a couple of weeks ago, I was in a resort called Hisaronu just up in the mountains about 10 min dolmus ride away from Fethiye.
I had been there been 5 years ago and it's changed so much. It is so much more "English Touristy" now than it used to be. I actually hated it. It's like Blackpool but hotter.
The prices for 90% of the bars and restaraunts were in Sterling!!!
Now, this is a holiday town, not Fethiye which is still pretty nice. I just didn't have that much of a good time there. I was there with my Turkish girlfriend and she wasn't too impressed. I was quite ashamed as I suggested it :/
We decided to pack up and spend the last week in Izmir. I had such a great time there. I prefer it "Turkish" to touristy.
I suppose it all depends what you like.
Saying that though, Olu Deniz is a stunning beach still! |

Like TEFL then.
I was in Fethiye in April as well as Dalyan, Dalaman and Kayaky. Lovely scenery but ruined by Brits. No real work full time unless you want touting and barwork in the holiday time.
I remember having lunch in a small restaurant in lu Deniz which is near Fethiye and I was waiting for my red hot lahmacun to cool down before adding the salad and rolling it up when the waiter showed me how to roll it up. I was really embarassed as we were speaking English and I didn't want to explain that I had eaten thousands of them. |

Thanks tekirdag - paragliding is of interest to me. My Uncle is a paragliding/hangliding nutcase and took me up in the air when i was in California. From looking at the picture you posted it looks like a perfect spot. |

Thanks for your advice Suzie. Istanbul really is the place for me but i am thinking of starting off in Fethiye purely because i would have a house to myself.
Too many tourists = not good!
I guess i'll just have to weigh up the pros and cons of it all.
by the way, what do you mean by activity groups? ...what sort of things are on offer?
Music is my passion so i hope to get really into that (possibly even make some) rather than drink myself into a stuper!
I am not exactly clear on what sort of work i will be doing yet but i am working on it. I'm just looking at all the options open to me. Is there any place on the web in particular that is good for looking for work in turkey?
Thanks again.
All the best. |

Nope, not at all. When I was signing up on these forums I had a total brain malfunction when trying to think of a name. The first thing I saw in this room was a box for a Kodak camera. Voila! |

Look Ansel, this in case you had'nt clicked by now is a forum which is frequented by people who generally teach. So we had this strange idea (or at least I did) that was the type of work you might be persueing .Now that its clear you have other plans ,care to share them so we can smile and be safe in the knowledge our jobs are safe from you ?Btw don't really rate your chances of finding any kind of work once the tourists go home . |
