I have been here for almost 2 years and a little embarrassed about my ignorance. I put in my last day at a school last Friday. I have been off for 7 days now trying to find another suitable school and nothing as of yet. My questions are .1. How long do I have before I have to be out of Taiwan after a work permit is canceled? Do i need to let anyone know or give my arc back to someone or something like that? I am assuming that my former employer let the government know the following Monday. 2. Can I call someone to find out? I am aware that a visa run will be necessary and that is no problem. 3. When I get to Hong Kong what should I have with me? I know I will need a bank statement and that will not be a problem I can find the address of the trade office in HK no problem. I have a brother here that is married should I get him to write a letter of invitation or something? I guess I will get the 60 day visa so I can have enough time to get a good job is there anything else I should bring with me to make the process as smooth as possible? I can pretty much hop on a plane any time I want to so I just need to get all the right stuff together. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

You have seven to ten days depending upon who you speak to. I would go for the ten days to be safe. The count starts from when your previous employer notifies the authorities, the problem is that you won't know when this is so you best count from when you left them to be safe.

No the ARC is yours and you don't need to let anyone know.

The FAP is the place to go for information about this.

Again this depends upon who you speak to in HK. Check out past thread for experiences here.

The problem is everybody has a different experience when dealing with TECO. What your experience will be depends entirely upon which office you go to, who you see and what kind of day they're having.

It is generally accepted amongst my friends that Hong Kong is not the place to go, as they are clamping down and becoming very strict when issuing visas. I went to Macau a few weeks ago beacuse I had left my school and my ARC was cancelled. My new work permit from my new school was not processed in time and therefore I had to do a visa run. By the way, you have 14 working days from the date your ARC was cancelled, to get out out of the country or get a new work permit. The FAP will send a notification to the address on your ARC about a week before the date you have to be out of the country, telling you what date you have to leave by. If you have a new work permit being processed, then it is possible to get your multiple entry visa extended, but this seems to depend on which branch of the Foreign Affairs Police you are dealing with. Taichung City will allow a visa extension, but Taichung County (where I live) won't, for example.
Back to Macau, the TECO was quiet (no big queues!), friendly and efficient. I flew in on an early flight, went to the office around 10am, went back at 4pm, picked up my visa and flew out that evening. Visa cost about NT$1600 for this speedy service. A friend of mine swears by Okinawa, where he says the people in the TECO have so few visitors, that they are positively jumping for joy when you walk in there! Other friends have gone to Bangkok as it is probably the cheapest if you are thinking of staying for a few days and making a holiday of it.
